If says you have insufficient space to install Win98?  Are you using the copy of FDISK from the XP Cd?

I assume it because at the time win 98 came out  there existed no drives with such a high capacity.
I am not sure  but i would assume it should be possible to find  some sort of mod in the net to get win98 to correctly recognize such big disks.

it should recognize up to 128gb drive.

seroius.

most of the time it wont, but it still shouldnt ONLY recognize 10mb of the drive, I mean...COME ON!

I really dont feel like having to buy a retail copy of xp if I dont have too :(

Well ,my first  Xp setup was also an upgrade from win98. I  did it  exactly for the reason to keep the dos enviroment and being able to use  some win  98 drivers for some old hardware.
If you wnt to avoid this  you really should make either a dual setup or install  a plain XP.

this is a computer I built for some gaming, so yep.

I think im going to go home and try to use partition magic to format the drives into some nice fat32drives...

then try to install 98, and use the upgrade cd to finish installin gwin xp...

wish me luck I suppose.

Real quick, I learned this recently...how did you format it as that could also affect installation and detection I believe.

lol I was just formatting it using fdisk..

now I used partition magic, it STILL came up as a 10mb drive in fdisk..

but 98 will install!!

even though its freezing at the splash screen lol...

atleast I have 98 on it now!!!

I had to partition it into like 2, 40 gig hdd for it to install, but thats all good.

The Win98 fdisk and format can't recognize drives bigger than about 60gb.  Microsoft does have an updated fdisk that you can download to handle larger drives.  I had the same problem with my 1st 80gb drive.

Quote
SYMPTOMS
When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

mc_cloud, use the win98 floppy to remove all partitions. Then set the pc to boot from the cd drive. Start the installation with the XP upgrade disk. At some point it will ask you to put in your 98 cd into the drive verify you have a legit copy. After that you will be all set. You can set your partitions and format right from the xp cd.

I wouldn't use fdisk, if you haven't already I would go to the web site of your hard drive maker download and use the hard drive utility.  Get that hard drive utility on a floppy drive and use that to do a low level format of your hard drive.  That should take out any partitions that may be there.  Depending on your hard drive maker the drive utility should also create a partition for you.  Once that is done have the utility check the hard drive for errors.  If the utility doesn't find any errors and read the hard drive size correctly (80Gb) then your hard drive should be ok.  As for installing Win98 and WinXP these Microsoft should give you a good idea of how to go about it:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dual_booting.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306559

Hope this helps.

I installed 98 to the point it said time to restart, I restart...and it sits at the splash screen.

mc_cloud, this has got me stumped too...is this a new mobo?
I've done a couple of the 98/ME (ugh) and 98/XP upgrades and they've went smoothly. I'd do as postman suggests....nuke the partitions on there now, boot with XP cd and see if it sees full drive capacity-if it does let XP partition and format the drive as FAT32 but don't make bootable, then restart it with the 98 cd and install it then upgrade it.

Since I don't know what hard drive you have and since this might be usefull for others.  Here are the hard drive utility links for the big four hard drive makers:

Maxtor

Western Digital

Seagate

Hitachi

I still suggest you run a low level format and diagnosis on the hard drive, especially before buying a full version of WinXP.  Assuming that your current hard drive is still good, I think it would be cheaper to buy a second hard drive.  Then you could format one drive as NTFS and one as Fat32, after that it would be just a matter of changing the boot order in Bios.  One other thing, take a look at the Win98 CD, is there a lot of scratches or maybe one deep scratch?  You could have a damaged install disk.  If you still decide to use fdisk, try Midnight Tech suggestion, it should work.  It has been so long since I have duel booted, I would have to look at some instructions myself.  Then again I always used separate physical hard drive.  Hope this helps.
