Boris Volfson, of Huntington, is the proud holder of patent 6,960,975, which is for a a space vehicle propelled by a superconducting shield that alters the curvature of space-time outside the craft in a way that counteracts gravity.

The interesting thing about the invention is that it defies the laws of physics and is put in the same league as a perpetual motion machine.

Abstract

A space vehicle propelled by the pressure of inflationary vacuum state is provided comprising a hollow superconductive shield, an inner shield, a power source, a support structure, upper and lower means for generating an electromagnetic field, and a flux modulation controller. A cooled hollow superconductive shield is energized by an electromagnetic field resulting in the quantized vortices of lattice ions projecting a gravitomagnetic field that forms a spacetime curvature anomaly outside the space vehicle. The spacetime curvature imbalance, the spacetime curvature being the same as gravity, provides for the space vehicle's propulsion. The space vehicle, surrounded by the spacetime anomaly, may move at a speed approaching the light-speed characteristic for the modified locale.

Stupid patent laws.  He should have to include a model on how it's done before he is granted a patent.  Another case of patent sitting in hope of a payout when someone else makes it work.

Patent 6,963,848 filed March 2, 2000 and granted November 8, covers "Methods and system of obtaining consumer reviews".

Patent 6,963,867, filed on March 31, 2003, covers "Search query processing to provide category-ranked presentation of search results".

Patent 6,963,850, filed on August 19, 1999 covers "Computer services for assisting users in locating and evaluating items in an electronic catalog based on actions performed by members of specific user communities".

Then there was the FAT patent.

Link to actual fat patent

Note the application date - April 24, 1995.  You may apply for a patent (under U.S. law) up to one year after a product using that patent has reached the market.  DOS 2.0 was released in March 1983, 12 years earlier.  The MS patent lawyer should have rejected the very idea of applying for the patent.

The patent was overturned but companies paid licensing fees first.

Patents need to go back to applying to a given method not the concept.  You should patent a mousetrap design not the concept of traps to capture/kill mice.  It should also be for something that can be built with current knowledge and technology.  Finally of course anyone who patents something they should have known before applying for the patent was not patentable should be penalized - including the patent lawyer.

This all seems eerily similar to a recent debate on this forum about Faster Than Light travel...

Short.  To the point.  But somewhat lacking in details  .  .  .

Short.  To the point.  But somewhat lacking in details  .  .  .

Firstly the warp thread started as an exhibition of cosmology and physics theroetical work. however fanciful, it had bones in the context it was offered in.

this patent contains no mechanism. no detailed plans. no machine no power source. That is what a patent is suposed to be and everything is is supposed to have; it lacks.  it contains no real cosmology or physics either even theoretical.

Neither of them contained any viable mechanism or viable science...

Not true. firstly the warp space metric is acknowldeged as valid mathematically. secondly the means of achieving it is valid though extraordinarily difficult to achieve. thirdly the actual mechanical means for creating it via casimir plates is well understood. whereas the patent is exceedingly vague. no cosmology. no physic, no mechanical details...

Assuming certain constructs that are extremely debatable, if not out and out Science Fiction at the moment...

In that thread i successfully adressed your every objection with either cites or logic. that you ignored information counter to your view point does not in any way render the two topics factual foundations similar in quality

I'll give you an example:  negative energy; your position; it (negative energy) was fantasy; my response was to show you cites that prove that you were wrong and that science takes the concept of negative energy seriously. articles on casimir plates, squeezed light, quantum theory. your response after seeing that evidence? "there is no serious scientist who blah blah blah!

you make a pronouncement, ignore any evidence that contradicts your position and then repeat your opinion. Then you have the gall to suggest my thread topic and this "inventor's" gibberish are equivelent?  :P

Besides that patent a*shole is doing the equivelent of domain squatting. that patent is meant to obligate anyone who actually produces a warp drive to pay that sh*t head royalties. He is a damned intellectual parasite.

I ignored nothing.  You offered evidence saying, well I can justify this outlandish theory with that outlandish theory, and I can justify both of them with outlandish theory number three, which would work as long as one assumes outlandish theory number four...

This isn't a debate where we can change each others minds, and your logic clearly is not my logic.  I believe with complete conviction that psuedo science is taking us up increasingly idiotic culdesacs and sideroads and is ignoring the search for truth, and that people are finding it difficult now to seperate science fact from nice frilly unproven theories which belong only in science fiction books.  It is becoming a religion with a GUT as the new Mecca, forever out of reach and beyond our ken.  Even if we find a GUT, it will only pose more questions, the existential horror of it all will be with us until the end of humanity.  And the idea of a human travelling faster than light is just beyond ludicrous...

You showed me a lot of stuff that in my opinion that was a lot of hokum, and I offered my subjective opinion of it...  Squeezed Light and the preposterously named Negative Energy are interesting phenomenon to be sure, but hardly evidence of future spacecraft that travel at Relativistic speeds, and even the articles you sourced shied away from actually associating Cassimir plates with the light barrier...

You call the inventor's patent gibberish?  I would say that he's a clever and audacious chancer who is taking liberties with a ludicrous field of law, and that if his design had included a set of casimir plates the size of Nebraska it would have been equally unrealistic...

$5000

The patent attorney's fee for this was at minimum $5000.

Son of a b***&
I go to school, get advanced degrees, publish & edit peer-reviewed work, and bust my ass.

And some PA spends 4 hours at home, probably drunk and giggling, writing this up.

I got's to get a piece of this.....

BTW: check out the "references" on the patent. One is even to a web discussion forum....
