RIAA prez: Lots of companies secretly install rootkits! It's no biggie!
RIAA President Cary Sherman gave a recent college press-conference where he addressed Sony's rootkit fiasco (among other things -- the whole trascript is worth reading for a quick visit to the planet greed). His take? Other companies do the same thing all the time!
"They have apologized for their mistake, ceased manufacture of CDs with that technology, and pulled CDs with that technology from store shelves. Seems very responsible to me. How many times that software applications created the same problem? Lots. I wonder whether they've taken as aggressive steps as SonyBMG has when those vulnerabilities were discovered, or did they just post a patch on the Internet?"
Um, Cary? We have a name for the kind of company that installs a rootkit on your computer. We call it "a criminal enterprise." It's hardly the kind of "bug" that your average software vendor has to patch. Link, Sony Rootkit Roundup Part I, Sony Rootkit Roundup Part II (Thanks, Robert!)
The above from Javora's post.
Uhhm...what does he think the RIAA is now days EXCEPT for a bunch of pirates???
Let's see what do they do...
Pays artists 10% or lower whilst taking over 90% for themselves...hence basically stealing the artists work...check
Charges artists for publishing fees sometimes even forcing the artist into bankruptcy...check
Makes it so that the artists can't even publish their own songs because the record labels say they own it...EVEN IF THE RECORD LABELS AREN'T publishing it themselves...check.
Uses P2P software to download material from other people's machines...check
(what you say...they do that? Yeppers, they set up servers and record IPs...so they may have an IP hit from someone, and then prosecute...cheap tactic eh? Of course to make sure it always helps if they download something from that person's computer just to make certain that it is what they are seeking...which means they themselves can only verify piracy BY....check...pirating themselves).
Plus, I'd call it an invasion of privacy...
so yep...I'd say the biggest pirates out there are part of the RIAA.
