Can we have the best of both worlds? Basic server concept
« on: November 01, 2005, 10:39:10 pm »
Some like a totally open type server, others a very restrictive server, and some a ballance (although the perfect balance is different for most players).  So why don't we try a server that caters to all.

The basic idea would be to have the map divided into say 3 sections.

Area 1 is an area that is for a totally open style, ie.  no disengagement rule, no PvP VCs,  fly what you want, combine any ships you wish, fly up to three ships, etc.  This section would make up 50% of the map and have relatively low DVs and an innovative map setup.

Area 2 is an area that is controlled by a tight OOB, fleeting rules and CnC in full effect, an extended disengagement radius, PvP VCs even for disengagements, etc. This would make up 25% of the map and have higher DV values.

Area 3 is an area that parallels most current servers with an OOB for total heavy metal online at once, a standard disengagement penalty, PvP Vcs for kills of capital ships only, etc.  This area would make up the final 25% of the map and have DV values on hexes halfway between the other two areas.  Maybe stick a slot restricted to smaller ships only in this zone as well.

Players could move their ships between zones, but would have to follow the rules of the zone they were in.

The team that wins 2 out of the three zones would be declared the winner.

For roleplay purposes we could say it was a contest conducted by an advanced race on the lines of the TOS episode "Arena" just on a larger scale, or perhaps by the Gamesters of Triskellon as they were found of designs that were three sided.

Ideas? comments?

What do you think?.

was a question I asked myself.

but if its all on one  map, its really not much different from any other server, perhaps it might actually attract more pilots as everyone could find a section with a style of play they liked.

Problem:

how do you keep current account of heavy metal for the second part, when you can have any ship you want for the first part?  If I am in the first part in a DNH, how does it get monitored that it wont count for the second part where HM is controlled?  Dont get me wrong, I think the overall idea has some merit, but putting all 3(or 4 with lights and smaller) into one map may cause traffic jams.

Excellent point, I'd simply suggest a ship naming protocal for the OOB sections.  Perhaps for example the shipname  "OOB-Bill Clinton" would indicate it was flying in area 2 and "HM-Laphroig" would designate a ship in Area 3 any capital ships encountered in those areas without said protocol would incurr a VC penalty awarded to the other side.

Edit:  Area 2 might have ship assignments posted on the forums as well.

Excellent Idea.....

Btw ..I'd still ike to see (on a serious server) and area of the map restricted to PF flotilla's, frigs, and destroyers...

I don't know if it would work but perhaps the pirate cartels could be used in place of empires in Area 1 to help with OOB tracking.

i mentioned it last server, and i heard it talked about on the alliance teaamspeak, but lets put this out for public discussion(maybe it already has) but why not have a server,of whatever rules of cugs vs dynaverse players.competition brings out the best(as well as the worse),but maybe it can add to total numbers, besides all the new people that have joined us.

What traffic jam ?

DNH vs CL = squished CL ( or any thing else for that matter with the right pilot)

[end traffic jam]

JK bud ...

interesting idea though !

Interesting idea. Blending it with the "slot" concept;  perhaps it could be modified somewhat to be a "standard current" server with an OoB slot and a FFA (free-for-all) slot? Focus in general on map VCs and vary the value of PvP VCs according to the "slot"?

Perhaps a challenge/duel type slot would be appreciated as well? (tournament style restrictions)

Player base would be my main concern. Having variety from one server to the next would probably work better.

I agree with t00l 100% about the need for server variety, there are no "bad" server concepts, there are just those we like better than others depending on our personal preferences. Some will appeal to more players than others and the turnout will often be representative of this.   However, for a one shot server it might prove to be interesting to have several types of servers combined into one, this might appeal to a wider player base than any one type of specific server, then again it might not, but we won't know unless it is tried.

I see no harm in trying, but I sure wouldn't want to be the admin of that server.  ;D

I can't even get to the CUGS site. It has been timing out for several days now. Are they still running as a league?
