WOOOT!!!! thanks for finding this. I'm just a few Windmills away from Being completly self suffecient out here at the ranch now. The only thing holding me back was electricity. And don't worry guys, I'll do everything I can to keep them from becoming a Bird Blender.

Here's a favourite of mine for alternative power

http://www.solaronline.com.au/

Products offered include not just wind turbines and solar panels, but also hybrid equipment as well.

Thanks for the Link Tracy.

You know It's kinda like a Child's dream for me. Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be Self suffecient 100%. It was almost a Fantasy for me. IT's kinda funny how after all these years, The Whole situation that I dreamed of, Literaly fell in my Lap. add to that, I'll be able to help out when and If I want, and not have to do the Whole Government Tax thing.

Seriously, I'm at the point where IF I see someone hungry, I'll be able to feed them myself, and No Government involvement at all. With some of these products mentioned, I'll be able to Sell electricity back to the Power company, along with having enough power to operate my ranch. I know that Jerry had mentioned awhile back, That solar cells where also becoming cheaper and also They where producing more power per square foot. Anychance anyone still has Links to that research?

Minor update... I have my Sisinlaw sold on the Idea this morning, so I'll be able to do one or two kits for the ranch. Now is there anything I'm not seeing as / possible problems etc. If so, I want to approach It now instead of later and being unprepaired.

Don't buy cheap inverters, make sure they produce true sine waves. If you combine solar panels with wind turbines, even on cloudy days (when its more likely ro be windy), you'll still have power. Have plenty of battery storage, even old reconditioned car batteries are food for this (just make sure they are well ventilated or install fans).

Oh, and check your maximum power requirements, dont overload a circuit by plugging in an electric heater that will use 2400W when the inverter is rated for 1000.

The good thing is, that all the wiring is low voltage, you can do it yourself  ;)

See if you can get wind speed records from a local station preferably for 20 to 30 meters up in the air. i think you are cat three but i'm not sure. you need to take that into consideration for the type of wind turbine you get. or if it is even feasable for your area.

I will do just that. Heck I even have KFOR on Speed dial just for the weather. Can't stand Channel 9 news.

Good idea Jerry.

wind map of Oklahoma:

from http://rredc.nrel.gov/wind/pubs/atlas/maps.html#3-41

What wind resource category III means:

  http://rredc.nrel.gov/wind/pubs/atlas/tables/1-1T.html

*WEB NOTE: Each wind power class should span two power densities. For example, Wind Power Class = 3 represents the Wind Power Density range between 150 W/m2 and 200 W/m2. The offset cells in the first column attempt to illustrate this concept.

Have any of you ever thought of a low-head hydroelectric setup? Some can be built with as little a three feet of elevation.

well the availability of a flowing water resource varies. i am currently looking for either a year around stream or a spring fed pond. but most of them are in the eastern portion of my state. I think i found one but with only 13.75 acres of land. about how much power will a three foot drop give you?

I can't help imagining the electrical connections in Green Acres and Stephen on the top of a telephone pole with a laptop playing SFC during a storm.

LOL, You must have a hidden camera Bro. ;)

I just checked the KW usage for the year out here, and It comes to on average, about 32.91, However During July August, It spikes to nearly double that. So I saw one site from storms list that sells a 65kw WindMill, and I think I'm going to contact them for more info.

Here's the thing, That one sells refurbished WM, however Brand new up to date Control boxes. It seems one of the big problems was getting Older Control boxes, and there parts, so they simply manufactured new ones.

Can cat 3 wind push a 65KW turbine?

Looks like Stormbringer is planning where to put that telephone pole.
