Interesting.  I've seen that scene before in DS9 and I didn't know it was extra Impulse Engines.

I personally don't think they are... I think someone overdid the glow on the rear-firing torpedo tubes.

I'd like to see the real model but hey, that's just me.

What would anybody want with a double set of impulse engines? Isn't two sufficient? And why trade rear-firing torpedoes?

also, is there room for both fore firing tubes and impulse generators? Not that anyone really explained how torpedoes are supposed to get up there in the first place. And as far as overglow, I think they just put it in the wrong place. I mean, there's no impulse glow where it should be at all. Wierd to say the least. Though perhaps someone tried to make the miranda faster because they were getting sloughtered so fast lol.

Well, adding extra impulse engines could give you extra speed and a little extra power for stuff.  Although I'm sure they are not the most powerful impulse engines, but a little extra power might be useful compared to extra power needed to power Aft Photon launchers.  And as SF2 had said, Mirandas were taking a beating during the Dominion War.  Maybe Starfleet wanted to give Mirandas extra Power and Speed to survive battles.  I'm sure if this was the case, only a few Mirandas received this kind of Modification.

And that was one thing I always scratched my head about aswell, how do they get thos Photons all the way up there to that launcher on Miranda's.  My only guess is that Pod is automated and Mirandas had a more limited Magazine capacity compared to other ships of its generation.

If you're an SFB person, Photons are energy-based weapons with no torpedo casings :D It's also a little unreasonable to slip a turbolift going up to the torpedo box, so I'm guessing it's automated.

Magnum: there are no aft photon torpedo launchers on this 'variant'.

While I can certainly beleive the rollbar pods are interchangeable, sticking a full-blown impulse engine up there seems silly. Do they have the blue crystal there too? I thought those only capped warp cores... don't tell me there's a 'mini warp core' housed in there... :X

Not only that ..  but it had a somewhat limited "deflector capability as well.

I did an updated version of the X-CLC with a new pod that had a deflector dish mounted inside.

The Mako is a TNG version of the Miranda ...  and there is a 3rd support in the center of the pod which acts as an access  and torp supply from the primary hull.

if you think about it the roll bars themselves could hold the power feeds and the photons waiting to be shot out the tubes

Yeah, but isn't it easier to have just the reactor there (And for us SFB folk: An AWR/APR) as opposed to the drives?

I really didn't see the difference but did notice the glow, I agree it's probably in the wrong place. Besides it's ridiculous to have 4 impulse engines on a ship that in her time was a FCL or for SFB fans FNCL. By TNG she's a destroyer at best, and really nothing more than target practice for the Dominion. I don't like the design (if it really even is a refit) I beleive Buzz is on the money with his 2 ships, as to what a Miranda upgrade would be.

I'll bash it using a GAFY ship if Mackie doesn't want to, not because I like it, but because someone else  does and what kinda team would we be if we didn't hook each other up  ;).
BUT I STILL WON'T DO THE SS. WANNA-BE LOL  :D

I still say it looks as if they overdid the photon glow.

Is this from DVD? Stupid low-quality video :(

rotfl...

well, as I said at BCU, since there's no glow in the proper locations for the impulse drive, it's reasonable to assume the fx department had gotten in to mackie's secret stash that night.

Or, one could get really rediculous and assume that the pod can mvam from the main ship and be used as a kamakazi missle/bomb ;D *ducks the various weapons*

IMHO ...

From what I could tell it looks like they put an extra impulse drive up there.  I 'm not so sure that this would be the best course to persue.  If extra impulse were to be installed there is a better way to do that ( I think at one time I considered doing that for the X-CLC : which is the immediate predecessor to the Mako)  I finally backed off ...  and decided to push ahead with the Mako.  The twin impulse on the primary hull utilized on the Mako (which uses the Sovy primary hull as its component) is a better application of that theory.

I 'm not suggesting that you need to use the primary hull of the Sovy ... BUT  I AM saying that the best application of the twin impulse would be to place them on the primary hull in the same manner that you see on the Enterprise E's saucer.

( I hope this makes sense)

AS for doing the bash ...  I'd say if you are attempting to make this ship ..  then the back of the weapons/sensor pod should have an impulse drive.

If you aim at nothing:  you WILL hit it every time !

There is an old model USS Avenger , that model is set up exactly as the idea mentioned in this thread. The reason is the author created the Avenger to seperate. Part of the rollbar and the weapon pod seperates as a support ship. I have the model on my other puter, it will need a texture update. But I haven't seen it anywhere else. Perhaps CJ or someone has it and can get it out to the community.

Actually, I sort of disagree with you about SFB Photons being purely energy.  I like to beleive in SFB that all torpedo weapons (Photons, Plasma, Hellbores, etc.) do have some sort of Projectile to be able to guide them to there target.  I've always invisioned SFB Fed Photons being fairly small (no larger then the size of a Basketball or Vollyball) that carries a tiny amount of Animatter shot out of a Railgun.  Plasma Torps would follow the same prinsiple except that they are "wireguided" (ie. some sort of subspace connection to there ship) to there target which makes them a seeking weapon and are fueled with Plasma energy from a ships EPS.  As they are only the size of a Basketball at most, a ship would have plenty available duriing any mission.
