The Hurricane and Me
« on: October 18, 2005, 08:54:26 pm »
Hey, just posting really quick to say I'm not dead, but the latest hurricane is expected to make landfall within a few miles of my house in Naples.  As such, I won't have much (or any :( ) play time the next couple days.  Hope to be back (with a house still  :-\) near the end of the week.

Hey, why dont peeps start building hurricane resistant homes? Like geodomes or steel and concrete structures? You wouldnt have to leave then... Just not go outside...

Diz, since Andrew in 92 they have greatly increased the building code requirements for homes, grading the risk by their proximity to the shoreline, likely areas for canes to strike, etc. They are now required to use steel to tie the roof of the house to the foundation to help reduce roof losses, etc. Of course, when a cat 5 comes thru, unless you have a steel ball bearing or the like, its gonna get squashed. BTW, most of the damage (such as with Katrina) came from the storm surge. Sure, 175 mph winds, if they actually came ashore would be devastating to all but the strongest of structures, but those winds would be like a fart in a bathtub compared to the 30-50 wave of water that they are saying came ashore in Biloxi, etc.

But yeah, a solid aircraft aluminum house about 5" thick with transparent aluminum windows and 20' stilts couldnt hurt, lol.

Hey bud  ...  not to poke my nose where it's not wanted ...   but even when Camile went through over 30 years ago ...  there were places that met those specs ..  and they still got flattened !  Some of the places in Biloxi, Paschristian and other places toward Pascagoula were made pretty darn good.

The problem is the shear magnitude of some of these "perfect storms" is incredible.

Camile had 200 mph + winds .....  and litterally dozens of tornados spinning off of it when it made land fall.  Katrina was pretty much the same way.

OH ...   BTW...

this one comming right now ..  at 882 mil bars is the most powerful EVER recorded.

I've gone 175mph tucked in behind the windscreen of my bike...  :o My G/F raised her helmet above my back to switch her head to the other side and doing so instantly ripped off her visor, hehe. She nearly flew off the bike, lol. I felt the tug against the bars and had to tap the back break to keep the front wheel down... She almost deployed her own parachute... Incrediblely powerful wind at that speed...

Well, officially it's been announced Wilma is THE most powerful Hurricane EVER (at least for a time...)
Still may only bring tropical storm force winds (like ONLY 40-55 mph  ::)), we'll see..
A lot of uncertianty in it's path yet.
I don't live anywhere near the water, thank god, but...after last year, it makes me a little nervous... :-\

Actually, I mostly concerned about losing internet and the ability to play on the server right in the middle of it... ;D
Who care if it blows the roof off... :P As long as I can fight!!  ;D

In any case, the only way to build a hurricane proof house is to build a concrete bunker. Sowehow I doubt anyone wants to live in a bunker.

Ill take a hurricane over most any other natural disaster anytime. You can see them coming and have time to evacuate or at least prepare. You also know that if you live in certain places, especially the coast, your more likely to get hit.

Tornados? Minutes warning usually, if that unless its coming from a good ways off, and if thats the case, its probably an F4 or F5 that will nuke your town anyhow.

Earthquakes? NFW! The ground suddenly starts shaking and your house falls on your head? No thanks. Not to mention that earthquakes are caused by motion of the tectonic plates and you might get unlucky someday and have a Mt. St. Helens pop up in your back yard, lol.

Ill take our hurricanes any day of the week.
