A call for help for a unique project
« on: September 27, 2005, 02:12:33 pm »
Originally I wanted to do this project quietly and release it as a surprise to everyone, but it's turning out that we'll need some more support to make it happen, and I haven't been able to attract enough help with that philosophy, so I've decided to go public.
This year, on November 10 will be 30 years since the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in lake superior.  For those who don't know of this story, it's an interesting one since the ship was basically there one second on the radar screens of a travelling companion, and the next it was simply gone.  No radio messages indicating the sudden disapearance, all 29 hands lost on board, no bodies were ever recovered.  No one knows for sure what happened, all anyone knows is that a few days later, at the end of a massive search all over Lake Superior the Edmund Fitzgerald was found on the bottom of lake superior some 17 miles from Whitefish bay (the safe harbor the fitz and her travelling companion were trying to make it to) and she was slit in two pieces, her cargo of iron ore spread all over the lake bottom.
Anyway, the project I had was that I wanted to put together a slideshow of the lake, the Fitz, her crew and other related pictures, and possibly add other things to it as well- such as a CGI vid clip of the fitz in a storm.  J Carney has been helping me with research and pics, and Kreeargh jumped on board and has been doing a bang up job, IMHO, at making a model of the Fitz.
Here is the crux of the matter: we need more help.  We are at an impass as to how to make the vid clip and could use more helpfinding pics and related info for the project.
If all goes well, we can tone down the model of the fitz (since it has some 80,000 polys right now) and release her for SFC, should anyone be interested.
This project is meant as a memorium of those who were on the Fitz when she went down, the families of her crew, and to those other nameless souls who have been lost at the icy fingers of the great lakes.  As such, any help would be greatly appreciated.  We'd like to have this done by November 10, so please email me of PM me if you can help.
Oh yes, and one final note, if anyone wants, I can post pics of Kreeargh's renderings of the Fitz so far, if you are interested.

IIRC the Discovery channel did a special on this subject in which the had CGI footage of the storm etc. Culminating in the placement of a plaque on the deck of the FItz in memoriam to the ship and crew. I would suggest contacting the Discovery channel and see if they'll give ya a hand.  ;D

Also A ship has been made for Star Trek in dedication to the Edmund Fitzgerald, it just needs to be modelled........

USS EDMUND FITZGERALDE NCC-11075

Thanks models, I think I saw that discovery channel show, and it was a good one.  however, if memory serves, materials from the show are expected to be bought, not given, and I was hoping to make this a free project with voluntary cooperation, rather than acquisition.
BTW, I like that fed ship, too bad I missed that one's release.
Stephen, I don't know reptor, is that his whole handle here in the dyna?

Arthur Anderson.  You all probably remember the name in association with the Enron scandle.  I remember it as the name of the only ship that left port during the storm to look for the Fitz or survivors....

Thank you, History Channel.

My pleasure, right now those pics are of a physical model. Maybe you and Kreeargh will tackle it as part of your project. Good luck with it  ;D

yep, He was the head for the Dyna Book Project. What you mean you haven't ordered one yet?  ;) He's a real nice guy with a quik wit. If he can't help, I'm sure he can at least advise you on what needs to be done, and how to do It.

The legend lives on from the Preservers on down
Of the nebula they call Gitchigumi
The nebula, they said, never gives up her dead
When the ion storms come early

I would love to see Edmund Fitzgeralds for all eras...  a J- or Y-class ENT cargo ship, a Ptolemy tug, a Batris/Norkova, etc...  the more, the better...
