OT: DnD Thread (DH)
« on: October 08, 2005, 11:01:06 pm »
Here was that map I was talking about DH.  Only the major stuff is included, small villages and what not arn't on there because I don't want to make it huge.  Isle of the Damned was my final area with these super buffed fallen angles (mainly Solars on steriods and stuff).

D&D, cool.  Been many moons since I played (1st Edition, not that ungodly 2nd Edition). I still have my original character.  ;D

Actually, I sorta prefer 2nd edition over the first...
Most of the stuff / functionality from 1st edition made it into second (until they started the 20+ level stuff, the 15 books for each class, etc. etc.)

The one that I'm not a big fan of is 3rd edition, the complete restructuring of everything has confused me to no end...

I have it all...books, dice,charactor sheets....even still have over 500 painted leads..

Had seveal charactors...

A mage-- Dewit,
A fighter--Randien

( funny thing....my first and favorite chactor....was the only fighter in the party...died ALOT....ended up with such a negative charisma that simply removing his helmet in an Inn would cause all the patrons to attack..got chased out of more than one village...DM was a bastard...hehe)

a fighter split class simular to the duelist,...Garret Jax
 a monk/thief/assasin,..Mendack
 a fighter/ mage,....Alek Dool
an anti-palidin possesed by a lawful evil sword....Ackmoor
An even a renegade maintainence Bot..kinda like Migiversh R-2 with an attiude and some heavy weaponry AMOK (Articlulated Mechaniclly Optimized Kenetipod)....party of time travelers rescued pod from automated dismantling station...

Got and played all the gold boxed IBM AD&D adventures...

Yeah the movie wasn't bad... except for that dopey cleric who tried to take on a white dragon all alone.  :screwloose:

Just started a Pen and Paper campaign again with my old group, we were BSing on TS about this last night.

Killed 3 PCs in the first session, damn they are rusty :)

I just seem to understand the 3.5 rules better.  Some friends of mine in high school tried showing me how to play 2nd ed. but I just couldn't get it

Just trolling around until I get back home... hrm, people thinking of a DnD campaign or something?

Curious; are there a handful here interested in playing through NWN or something?  I design for a PW 24/7 server, it's a very difficult place to survive though if you're used to a lot of magic items or easy monsters (nearly everything is modified, the default NWN creatures are a joke).

I'm asking because I also have been working on a NWN campaign I was going to run through Neverwinter connections, basically semi scheduled games I'd run as a DM for whomever wanted to play.  If there's any interest in this, let me know.. it's going to be a little longer before I get home or have time to play anything but there's nothing stopping me from working on it offline from here in.

Anyhow, I'll be back soon enough, I'm hoping to catch SGOV if I can manage.

We were talking about doing that when NWN2 comes out in a few months.   We've just been BSing a lot about this since my old party started playing pen and paper again.

That would be cool, of course last I heard it was late Q206/early Q306 so it might be awhile..

Shoot, I thought it was coming out this year.

Anyone know where I can get NWN besides eBay?

I think it's sold as a Gold edition now with the two expansions in one set?  Not sure otherwise... I do know the price came down some time ago though.

Actually, once NWN2 comes out, I would be glad to host a server for us to run our homegrown dungons.  I used to do it for my friends in town.  Someone would make a dungeon that would take one or two hours and some Friday or Saturday, we would all get together and run it, with the person who made it DMing.  It was a lot of fun.

I believe you can get the platinum edition which has both expansions, some of the modules that have been created by bioware plus some other extras. Not sure on the price of it though.

EBGames has NWN Diamond for @$29.99 US - should have (I think) the original packs + some of the player modules.

If someone's throwing a campaign together I'll pick it up as well, I'm missing a few CD's from all the original packs.

Well DM duties depend on what sort of server you are running, on hardcore RP servers DM's are quite busy people as they are usually constantly running RP quests for the playerbase. As the server I DM on is a mixture of RP/action i run both large and small scale RP events plus i run some action events as well.

Other duties i do as a DM is enforce the rules that are on the server, help players if they require assistance, server issues such as fixing bugs, rebooting the server etc. I am starting to look into the more devlopment side of the game as well, starting to learn more about creating areas. implementing new items etc.

So DM duties can vary depending on the server type.

When I was lead admin on Ace's World, I played the adjudicator role.  We actually made a whole DM area with offices, a large court room, and waiting areas.  Most of my online time was spent hearing player complaints in that court room as well as punishing those who broke server rules.

I made some beautiful areas.  We were running a Lord of the Rings mod, so I put together the Timeless Hall of Ilúvatar.  Might have been the best looking area in the module.  It was set in the void (using the caverns tileset) with fireflies for stars.  I had this long bridge that ran out to a 3x3 island of stone, which was the only ground in the void itself.  Put a tower with very tall doors in the middle of that.  Right in front of the tower, I had four small trees, one for each season, since it was the Timeless Void.  It was a stunning site, since to get to it, you had to find the correct transition in a 3x3 grid of completely black areas that would be infinite loop if you didn't find it.

Now I want to play NWN again LOL.

NWN2....
<drool>
Been playing the first one, running thru a bunch of modules with my buddy Knob, lotta fun.
Tried a couple open to the public servers... ugh... one allowed you at startup to select from +20 AC armor/robes and +20 weapons... maybe it was an uber-tough world but I prefer to work for my magic/levels... didn't go any farther.

Sweet... since I have a machine that can run it...

Is some one willing to put up a host for the first NWN?

I think I could go for that and would splurge on a  copy.

If it gets going, let me know....

BTW, my favorite character ended as a 12th level/5th level Thief/Illusionist Gray Elf named Lingus.

Lingus the Cunning. ;)

Some of the best admin work you've done.

I doubt you remember ..  but I built a very good charactor .. and there were a couple of evening several of us hooked up...   you messed  with one of the tougher levels ...   it took nearly 15 minutes to beat a couple of really nasty critters ...  some of the best fun I've ever had on ANY NWN server.

BTW...  I found that charactor in an archived server somewhere.  If I can get DSL soon ..  I will be getting those updated packs  (what ever they were called ) ...  and I'll be back at Aces (if it's still there).

The only thing I personally stay away from are those that rely too much on "demonology".  (And there are a few out there like that)

The only mage I ever played was 'inherited' from a guy who left town...

20th level MU with psionics (1 major & 2 minor disciplines from 2nd addition before it became a class unto itself).  He stood toe to toe once fighting with Orcus before I realized I could just kill the clerics summoning him and he would go away in the Hill Giant campaign series.

Personally, it was almost always Elven thieves and Dwarven War Clerics.

NeverWinterNights Its, correct me if I'm wrong, a d20 based RPG/DnD type game that is possible of single and multiplayer scenarios.

More or less
It's an older CRPG  (3 years old maybe?) that was based off of DND ruleset
It was designed as a single player game, but included the ability to set up a game online and run
some people through an adventure.

I don't know if it's a persistent world set up or not.
if it is I've been missing out..

NWN2 is essentially the same game with much better graphics.
The game engine (from what I've heard) while improved, is supposed to be kept largely intact.

There are still persistant servers out there Hexx, but you have to try a few (or at least I did) before you find one that suits you.
Geez, I bought the platinum edition, came with the original game, Shadows of Unrintide and Hordes of the Underdark. What is in the diamond edition?

Diamond's got the three original packs, something called Kingmaker, and, uhmm some other module..

More importantly (for me) it keeps them all on one CD and has all the games codes in one place

someone will need to get a current link for the latest "packs" that are used ...  and as well for the latest patch.

(I'll see if I can talk Nanner into getting it to me ..   i'm still stuck in the phone age ....  but hopefully will change by the end of the month !)

Yes, you can either download it from the nwn bioware site, or you could use the update option at the startup menu.

That's pretty much the standard stuff you need to play on the majority of servers, there are some servers that may require some server specific additional downloads these are usually found on their homepage.

A download i could recommend is an animation fix which can be found at NWN Vault, a lot of people suffer from frequent crashes in nwn  which is something to do with the animations or something, usually a "sound loop" type noise occurs shortly before a crash. The hakpack replaces the character animations with some more stable ones, even though the running animation looks a bit wierd sometimes i find these animations a lot more stable and have experienced less crashes.

If you are having a lot of crashes then i recommened the download, if you aren't then there is no need to download and install the file.

It can be found here:  http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Hakpaks.Detail&id=251

I'm up for it, but seeing as how I'm a total n00b at it AND running a 1.2gig laptop with 16 megs video memory...  well hehe... I don't think it'll be much fun for any server I get on.

Oh, I remember exactly what it asked for processor wise....

450MHz processor to run.....

My old system, though it was a PII 450MHz, registared with the game as a 433MHz system and that was why I had so many problems trying to play it.....

Perhaps a group of us who are interested in playing could meet up on a server, Paladin came up with the idea of playing through NWN connections but said it may take some time for this to be organised as he was away from home.

Would be cool if we can sometime get this organised, myself and others were up for playing JKA or JK2 when those games were suggested but that went quiet.

Just let me know what server.

There lies the problem heh, i have been tied to the same server for over a year, i would suggest the server as i DM on it, but its currently having PRC intergrated into it and as a result is very buggy.

I could do some looking into finding a server, depends really on what the group that wants to play on it is looking for. There are some hardcore RP servers (forced RP) such as the famous "Hybrid Middle Earth server"in that server it can take a long long time to progress in terms of levels. There are some action/RP servers, they encourage rp at times but dont force it, and there is some pure hack and slash action servers.

I've played on the hardcore RP servers before, and to be honest i instead perfer the action/RP where RP isnt forced.

When Paladin gets back, we can try his NWN Connections idea, until then it looks like joining a server in order to keep interest until Paladin is ready.

I made two, very hard to play a mage (wizard) solo. lol  Much MUCH easier as a cleric.  It's a RP server, so be prepared for slower then usual xp earnings.  But hopefully a richer play environment overall.  The good thing is you don't need any fancy mods/(haks) to play it.

Yeah, there is also a level 20 restriction until you do enough RP to gain credits to go beyond that, not particulary a fan of force RP to gain levels.

I found another server which looks quite interesting, based on the screenshots etc, but it requires hakpaks. http://www.sfrealm.com/

It was rated quite highly at the server hall of fame at NWNVault

There are a number of servers listed at NWNVault, i'll check more of them out.

I was just there.  Seems I've been on that server before and I vaugely remember it, or rather the character I have.  Much has changed.

It is still pretty laggy, especially compared to my memory of what it used to be like.

Anyway I have a 10th level on that server and I would rate it 2.5 out of 5 due to lag.

Is anyone still playing nwn if so, where?

Also is Paladin around? he brought up the idea of having a nwn connections event that we could all join up.

Haven't played in a bit due to lack of time... really need Frey to post something here... he told me that someone (in XC, I believe) has  a NWN server with a persistant world....

I'm sorry, I haven't checked this thread in some time...

I can do one of a couple things... I can build no matter where my pc is, so a campaign for NWN is no problem.  I've been trying to put together a D2 campaign lately.. some success, some frustration there :P

Also, the server I've been playing on the past couple years is called Exaria2.  I've been a player there the past couple incarnations... it's a low magic world, lots of rp going on but it's not enforced.  Oddly it's been set up challenging enough that I find it's either a) hardcore rpers or b) hardcore pgers because of difficulty of the spawns almost means a party is crucial to most areas (not all).  Makes for a cool atmosphere... it's home for me.

I'd still be willing to run a campaign if anyone was interested, the NWN engine is very familiar to me (years building/dm experience) so starting one up wouldn't be difficult.

Or for that matter I'd be willing to try other servers where you all play... I'd never fully leave Exaria2 because of the high quality of the playerbase but going elsewhere to play with friends is a no-brainer.

Let me know what you think...
