I am seeing any number of E-Bay auctions for old versions of SFB for of course alot less money.  In addition, I have a good deal of nostalgia for the old SFB box.  It has a certain quiet dignity and grandeur that the current box lacks.  Also I used to own that box.

Be that as it may, I am wondering how different the rule sets actually are (1999 ADB rule set vs anything pre-ADB name on box) as of course I'd like to save some money and see that box in my hands again.

Thanks for any comments or feedback.

The task force game was a half size, about 10 pages.  Had the cruisers from the 5 races.

Boxed game expanded with a few more ships, and the rule book was a few more pages.

The expansions (1-3) were half size again, and added a bunch of pages, and the rest of the races.

then they went commanders rules, ADB formed around then, and now the rulebook has.. well.. alot of pages, plus more expansions.

That help?

Sort of.  What I am trying to figure is if the rules are basically the same.  I prefer to get the SFB rules and essentially Module C1 and C2 for 20 bucks by buying old SFB stuff than buying high priced new stuff.  If I get the old rules, will I be able to play SFB without much of a problem?  That is what I am trying to figure.

Yes the Basic rules remained pretty much the same. It was when they added the expantions and then converted them to the commanders edtion that things started to get confusing.

But you should still be able to play with the old set and c1 and c2.
