SG5 Bug reports
« on: October 02, 2005, 08:00:13 pm »
Just a quick note - my account is not earning any prestige.

I've ran several missions, Mission Debriefing shows earning prestige...in those missions alone I earned over 3K prestige, but my account's been sitting at 3915 the whole time.

I'm going to start a new account, but thought this should be reported. Bonk email me if you need my account info to query SQL.

Weird, I can see no reason for it in the db.

There was a crapload of dead AI in the db this morning. (a lot of AlTs? or mission crashes?)

Now the server won't start... working on it...

Found a bugged hex(18,25), fixed. (you may have passed through it?)

Deleted your first character Frey so you can reuse the WONLogon for another account if you wish.

Please stop the server on my login, hard reboot the machine, and then start the server on the process sentinel if you get a chance today, thanks, let us know here when you have done so, so I know if its you rebooting or another crash.

If there were more PP involved I would have tried to fix it, but with the other problem this morning I wanted to eliminate this as a possible cause.

I can add 5K PP to your new account if you wish, to be fair.

Lol, done - added 5K to the current and lifetime prestige of 'FA_FREY_XC2' to make up for the bugged account and the harassment from Dizzy.  ;D

Hexx, it's the response that's worth harrassing you alone ...

That's our payment ;)

Okay, umm can I recreate my original account and have the prestige I've earned currently on FA_Frey_XC2 put there?

That way I can use the webyards, as my email addy of the campaign account must match my forum logon, correct?

I appreciate it, and yes I was in 18.25, I think that was the first mission I ran - might also explain the reason I had only 2 spares and 1 shuttle when I had refitted completely upon receipt of the new ship in the gameyards.

Sure I can do so, but your forums e-mail need not match your WONLogon, as I went back to the old system to allow multiple accounts to use the webyards. (The Forge is using the forums login for the webyards though).

I'll watch for the new account (or let me know when its created) and I'll transfer the PP from the #2 account to the new one.

You running any firewalls?

You happen to remeber what mission it was and what ship you were in?

Anytime, eariler today would probably be better, just announce on the IRC channel around 10 and then 5 minutes in advance that there will be a reboot.

http://www.dynaverse.net/webmap_sg_sql/dynachat/irc_chat.php

The profile for the process sentinel is saved, the server should just launch when you start the process sentinel. If it does not, then just start the serverplatform.exe and let me know, I'll look for other causes.

Taking a mission in a hex should not have been able to corrupt the hex at all, but this certainly appears to be what hapenned. As I pointed out previously, this has only ever occurred on SQL. This is what we need to fix the serverkit for SQL, I am very happy that this has hapenned  ;D

What we need to do is try to replicate the error and keep our eye on the serverplatform and SQL tables. If Frey can remember what mission it was, and what ship he was flying (it may even be debepant on server time though) we have a good chance of doing this.

It's an ALT - F4.

I know this is what is causing the runtime errors.

Want me to duplicate it?  :flame:

Lemme guess...

People are alting out everytime they don't like the AI draw in an EEK mission... and they think its acceptable?

That would explain the huge amounts of dead AI I'm finding in the db, and why it didn't happen in testing since we did not have mandatories on...

There are many reasons for AltF4. Instead of speculation, we should ask ourselves if SQL can be made to handle AltF4's.

The only reasons for an alt should be a bugged mission or bad lag.

We have not tested this setup on the flatfile, the same thing may happen.

Besides, the runtime error is not crashing the kit, it keeps running, something else is doing it.

Do firewalls cause this to crash?
Cool (learn something new everyday)

I'm wiht Dizzy, I've alted out of never ending missions, as well as missions that count down to
zero and don't give you the option to do anything.

Should we be telling people not to alt-f4 in ANY case?
In which case we'd need to be able to tell them someway to end some
of the missions,
or
Can we get a list of 'acceptable" times to alt-f4 out of missions

Also I've noticed there are (at times) alot of Forfeits coming up on the news-
mainly from plyers I don't know (Of course I don't hang out everywhere, so there's lot that i don't know) should these forfeits being showing up for any legitimate reasons or should we be trying to
track down anyone who's name appears more than once..

Every flatfile server has tested altF4's. Happens every server. Especially on AOTK2 and it was particularly stable. So what 'setup' are u reffering to?

Also- if I may jump in with more idle, completely uninformed speculation..

-Could it be the way the data is saved? I know on the flatfiles the game goes back to the last turn
Last night the server crashed just as I came out of a mission & received promotion to Captain.
When it rebooted I was still a Captain, instead of having lost the last mission.

-Could it be the webyards? During test and early on in the server I'd buy a ship from the webyards
and see it in the shipyards on the server, now the shipyards on the server appear to be full, purchases still go through from the webyards, but they don't show up in the shipyards listings.IS there a maximum
number of ships the yards can have and we're screwing this up by adding additonal purchased ships from the webyards?

Of course I have no idea if any of these would be the case, just love the sound of my own voice..

Right, those are bugged missions, but that never seems to happen to me. Using a software firewall is going to cause you to have more bugged missions due to lag and lost packets.

Acceptable times to Alt:
1) mission obviously bugged (Hand of Bethke for example)
2) hideous lag
3) mission does not end
 ...thats about it.

BUT - Turn off your software firewall... in fact uninstall it (most poeple seem to be unable to fully disable them, they tend to just exit the tray app) and you'll find you experience a lot less bugged missions and less lag - guaranteed.

Hmm well I'll try and figure out if I actually have a firewall, most common ocurence for me though
was the fighting around.. 16/27ish. I had a couple of countdowns to zero, I think since pretty much everyone on the server is fighting as close to those hexes as they can, there are a number of missed drafts, or people mission draggin people who have already been drafted/ taken a mission in another hex.
I wasn't on alot last night, but it happened to me at least 2x and to a number of other people from the reports on TS I heard.

I have a question. What version of DirectX is the serverkit working with? The AOTK2 server was set up to use DirectX 9. Alder versions of server kit have relied on older versions of DirectX calls, which DX9 handles, but not as well as it handles the ones it was designed to work with.

This is the same build of the serverkit as AOTK2. The problem is not related to directx.

We may even see the problem persist after switching to the flatfile db. It has not been tested yet on this setup.

Dynaverse servers were far more stable before the advent of software firewalls. The directory server uses a firewall detector for a reason. It is unfortunate that it can be sidestepped. In future I'd like to see the firewall detector more sophisitcated, it should port scan, and ping the client, as well as check for error rates.

I'm thinking perhaps it is shiplist related.

I dont know if it was because of another preexisting problem but I kept running into missions where my AI wings were actively targeting me, such as a bugged 2v2humans planet assult. I had to alt out of this and on another mission as well.

This will need to be tested on the new test server tomorrow and you're in charge of that. ;) We need exact details on it all.

There are a few differences from the testing to the actual "live" run.

TESTING TIME:  1-when I purchased a ship in the WebYard it showed up on the shiplist within the campaign(The Forge, maybe even testing)
2-First round of testing(first round of SQL, before SG05, The Forge ) there were forced missions.
3-Prior to going live, there were no forced missions.
4-Purchasing any ship, they would show up for your use the very next turn
5-People alted out of missions that were bugged or hung.

LIVE CAMPAIGN:  1-None of the ships I purchased on the WebYard showed up on the shiplist within the campaign
2-Forced mission during the whole time
                         3-again Forced missions
4-There was an extra turn delay for purchasing your ship.
5-People alted out of missions that were bugged or hung.

There are more I am sure, but cant think of them right now.  My bet would have to be with what was different between testing and Live time.  The part about Shiplist interaction within the campaign as per purchasing on WebYard for one.

Remembered:  I purchased a C8K on Sunday night around 10:30 pm EST on the WebYard even though there was one in the yard.  I logged off for the night.  Monday night when I came online, I had my ship as I should have, but.... here is the funny part> Before I even logged on I was told on TS that it was still showing the C8K as still being purchased in the WebYard, under my name.  Another thing to maybe check out.

I may be causing you guys even more work, but I too beleive the SQL is a better system once you  get the bugs out.

I will post more as I think of it.

It's an ALT - F4.

I know this is what is causing the runtime errors.

Want me to duplicate it?  :flame:

Question, since you feel you can duplicate it, why then during testing when we did it purposely did it not crash? I myself did it over 40 times, and I know Soreyes did it probably nearly as many, and a lot of others did it too.  Funny but it did not drop every 1/2 hour, or even at all.

Let me rephrase that last part.  We forfeited, not alted out, my bad.  I appologise.
