Here is what i've been having for an idea for damage textures.
This is the original Excelsior Saucer texture
This is what most damage textures are now-adays, a simple Craquelature filter
And this is what ive been using for a Universal damage texture
Now what ive been thinking is to put an underlaying structure ON TOP of this last texture, so that when you shot across the texture you would see the superstructure, as well as what the phaserbanks would look like as they got hit, or what a damaged Impulse engine would look like. etc.
Im working on a basic version of my idea for comparison.
