Opera 8.5 is 100% Free!
« on: September 21, 2005, 08:38:21 am »
Up until now, you could download the Opera web browser for free, but it had an ad banner at the top and no official support.  You could pay a $40 registration fee to remove the banner and have support, but who wants to pay $40 for a browser?  Opera has done away with this fee and is offering their browser, without the ad banner and with support, absolutely free.  Go here to try it out. http://www.opera.com/

Its about time. I was quite grossed out by previous versions of Opera. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to pay for a browser when all the others are free.

I'm using it right now on Vector Linux and it's super-fast.  Pages appear to be loading almost instantaneously.  Now, if I could only use some of my favorite Firefox extentions with Opera, it would be perfect.

I put a post about this in the Free and Legal Software thread along with a link to download yesterday.  Enjoy.

Ever since I first found Opera (version 5 or 6) I've thought that it was the best browser around, even better than Firefox.  In fact, I've never thought it was fair that Firefox got so much credit for things like tabbed browsing and mouse gestures (through extensions) that have already been in Opera for a long time.  There were several things about Opera 6 and 7 that I didn't really like, but every complaint I have had about Opera seems to have been fixed in this version.

Before I found Opera, I used IE because I didn't know any better (and it wasn't nearly as bad then as it is now).  Then I switched to Opera and absolutely loved it.  I switched back to IE mainly because there were a few pages that I visited regularly that wouldn't work properly in Opera, and I didn't want to mess with switching between browsers.  When Firefox 1.0 was released, I gladly accepted it as my main browser and even removed the shortcut to IE from my desktop, but it always irked me a little that FF was getting all the credit for "new" features that I first saw in Opera a few years before.  Now, I'm switching back to Opera.  The only thing that FF has over Opera IMHO is its extensions.

Using it now. It does indeed seem more efficient. (No nasty gecko overhead) I like how it identifies the document download separately from the images in the load status at the end of the address box. Nice for slow dialup.

Only beefs so far: It still has issues with identifying third party cookies however, and identifies itself as MSIE6 by default. And the smilies popup here does not wrap properly.

Overall:

(picks up the RSS tag nicely...)

I like how it loads the webmap and shows the hex info popup text, but the frontpage of it doesnt look right because of the text size which I can't seem to find a control for. Perhaps I just need to use some <font> tags...

I found the control for it in Opera, its under "View...Zoom" Still doesnt look quite right though so I guess I'll need to fart with some *gasp* font tags, I gotta tidy the generated html at some point too...

I dont know ,something  changed  a few months ago ,and since that day the font size is somehow weired,.. i set it manally to 80%after loading of the first page to have it right.
I had assumed though, that i eventually made a mouse gesture i wasnt aware of a few months ago.
I sometimes open windows with blank content via mouse gestures, and do other stuff, but dont ask me how... it is always a weired experience, nearly  like some magical effect!!;)

Mouse "gestures" - not cool, I disabled them at their first appearance.

I have found this version of Opera too buggy for development use. It randomly refuses to load pages, makes it difficult to determine if errors are on the page or in the browser.

Ive gone back to the only slightly slower but much more reliable Firefox.

P.S. Firefox 1.0.7 is out today.

I love mouse gestures!  I often find myself trying to use them when I'm browsing through the files on my computer  :smackhead:
