We seem to have broken the forums since this morning somehow... looking for the cause.

Thanks guys, its sill not quite done though. I got it updated to the latest version of phpbb (thus the template issues), but have not gotten it converted to MySQL yet. I have gained a huge(er) appreciation for MySQL after working with this MS SQL db. I am committed to getting it converted to MySQL however. Gonna give it another crack today before updating the SGO files. (I had intended to spend this time on the kills pages, oh well...)

Why don't forum software use Oracle?

BTW, ISC forums have no posts?

Its still broken. Going to do it all again. Nobody mess with it please.

Why not Oracle? I have no Idea. Probably an absurd price. The real Question is why MS SQL?  :banghead:

MySQL is sooo straightforward compared to it. (and php is geared for it)

MS SQL isn't so bad, as long as it is version 6.5 and your running MS SQL Enterprise Manager to access it.  It probably isn't 6.5 though as old as the forums are.

MS SQL Server is the MS Windows version of Sybase.  Sybase is a pretty good Database. It's certainly more easier to program PL/SQL entities than in Oracle.  If you use a cell phone, chances are one of the switches servicing the market you passed through had a Sybase database to populate its member registry. Still, there are a lot more switches using Oracle than Sybase.

MySQL is not a company standard database and I don't see it happening with many F500 companies. You are much better off learning Oracle and to a lessor extent:  Sybase and MS SQL Server.

Its MS SQL 2000 we're running, restoring an MS SQL 7.0 db.

I just like MySQL much better, its so much more straightforward, permissions and database management is much simpler, I like the command prompt interface.

A lot of what I imagine is supposed to make MS SQL simpler in fact makes it more cumbersome.

jsp j2ee and oracle, I know, I know that's what the market says it wants, but I can't stand them. Legacy systems in my opinion. They'll die out with the fogeys administering them.

php-mysql is so much more efficient in my opinion. Its populartity continues to grow. apache-php-mysql will rule the web. IIS-MSSQL/Oracle-JSP/ASP has no place in my future... portability is all.

Oracle is the Unix of Database systems. It'll go when Unix does.  JSP is definitely old technology.  It's all CFM and JSF now.

Watch out for J2EE EJB 3.0 specs. coming out next year. ;D

It is running again. Apologies for my crankiness and any inconvenience.

I figured out what had happened. (the forum is allergic to certain manual db edits).

Please do not adjust any settings till I figure out what is different about templates in this version, and exacty how the old template was customised.

Do not post your doctoral thesis either, no guarantees yet. I'd still like to get it moved to MySQL.

I'll leave it be for now. Now Dizzy you have a shiplist and map for me? (shiplist will do...)  I'll come back to this later.

It seems the SFC2.Net forums cannot be updated. All the private forums get broken. Shame, because phpbb 2.0.3 is full of security holes... hopefully it won't get hacked. Its stuck forever... unless I can get it converted to MySQL, it might take an update then... but I have my doubts.  (as the MS-DTS cannot export blobs and the MySQL Migration Toolkit fails to find the JRE on our servers, sigh...)

I am currently working on them... unfortunately a link was posted before they were ready.

I will be finished shortly. You will need to logout and clear your cache before using them.

I will post here when they are ready.

(Recall I am on 31.2K dialup and everything is verrry sllloooowwww...)

ouchies, the only time i remember being on dial up (6-8 years ago) i pretty much hated it. i could only spend a short time online cause the phone calls were then expensive, it was very very slow (bbc news site took 3 mins to fully load in) and then we just gave up in frustration.

cant you get dsl where ya are bonk?

There is no cable or DSL in the domain of the cluster fly. (and satellite is just silly)

The SFC2.Net forums are back up, still on MS-SQL and phpbb 2.0.3. Clear your cache and cookies before using it.

Now to try and find the patience to work on the webmap kills pages some more... very bad timing with these two things in conflict, oh well.

I will attempt to convert the SFC2.net db to MySQL and update phpbb at a later date (a few weeks?). I'll do so on a copy of the forums so the current SFC2.Net forums will remain up.

Again, apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. (I know its been trying mine...lol.)
