Microsoft and Time Warner have explored a variety of possible combinations of the former's MSN Internet portal with the latter's America Online operations, including a merger of the two into a new company that would be jointly owned, according to several people involved in the talks.

Google could try to bid for America Online to preempt a Microsoft takeover and protect the $380 million in revenue Google gets from its biggest partner, according to an analyst.

Though Google is now as big a Monster as MS, I hope Google gets AOL. Unless this is just a bid to purchase a larger retail customer base--which MS already has if one thinks about it--it is on the whole a poor financial purchase for MS. AOL is the poorest performer in Time-Warner's portfolio, and that includes its abysmal movie studio holdings.

Oh God help us and save us... I just hope whoever does buy it squashes it and gives Winamp back to Nullsoft and make it stop phoning home to AOL servers on every startup. But I fear that MS will buy it because it fits the whole MSN sex chat thing...

Sssssss, burned!  :D  Good one Toasty0, but no, I've never been to an AOL chatroom, I just hear that's the way they are. I know that MSN is used for erotic chat a lot by observing the chat logs of youth. (yes an invasion of privacy, but safety first... I read things that I could not believe, chilling and scary... or maybe I'm just a prude... or just getting old and conservative.?)

No, I am not a pervert of some kind. I have virtually zero interest in sex.

The logs I checked were those of my nephew, for his own protection. I had a few words with him about it which he seemed to appreciate.

The other logs I checked were on computers I was responsible for in the course of my work. I identified abuse of the privilege of use of said computers, that was not what they were for. I made an effort to put a stop to it.

Please apologise for that insinuation.

Ah, those types of chats eh?

I know all about those types of chats...

I'm certain he "REALLY appreciated" that chat.

Oh yeah, just like I appreciated my parents nosy curiousities picking apart every single little thing I did on a computer and discussing it with me.

I think I appreciated those talks so much I'd dream that I was in purgatory before dreaming about having another one of those talks (well maybe a slight exaggeration, but one can get the idea).

But then, I don't frequent chat rooms or talk about sex on forums or chat rooms typically so that isn't really a big issue (though I'm certain if my parents had thought anything like that was occurring they'd have blown up and really gone beserk).

Still, I know all about "appreciating" those conversations...

Did you reveal your real name and address to strangers online in the context of a sex chat?

My nephew had, he is a little naieve about these things. I had to explain to him about predators.

Knowing you, you are probably not as naieve. Not every case of this is the same.

Did you pay for your computer and internet access out of your own earnings? If not, then you are not entitled to complain.

Naw, my parents DID make that abundantly clear about those dangers...so much so I didn't even really use the internet except to check email around them (even now I don't do much on the internet with them around, or much with computer games even, my mother is paranoid I think).

Even when I was with relatives (which I was quite a bit when I was growing up) I still didn't divulge that information really, well actually, I do use my real name and always have, but I didn't ever state my address or anything of that nature.  In retrospect I respected my parents wishes in that regard pretty darn well!

However, to this day I still don't pay for my internet access...as my cousin can attest to (and who's connection I'm actually using at this very moment!!!).

Gotta love relatives!

it is on the whole a poor financial purchase for MS. AOL is the poorest performer in Time-Warner's portfolio, and that includes its abysmal movie studio holdings.

That depends on what the actual target is.  AOL or Google.  AOL is paying Google $382 million/year in ad revenues.

Microsoft is competing with Google in the search market.  Make the large AOL market a default to Microsoft search and at the same time deny Google substantial income.  Good economic sense if you are dedicated to taking over the search marketplace and have $40 billion in the bank to play with.

just hope they don't figure out how to turn off the conversation recorder
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

Once they have, they should be savvy enough to stay out of trouble. (one would hope)
