OT: Desperate for help
« on: September 18, 2005, 11:45:44 pm »
As the title says, I'm desperate fpr help. I'm turning to you guys (and gals) because we are spread out and can cover a lot of ground.

Recently a friend was evicted from his house and had to give his dogs away. One he couldn't find a home for, and since he is now living in a motel, preparing to move out of state, I have taken her in with the promise to find her a home. She's a sweet dog, loves attention and to cuddle, is good with kids and other animals, only gets a little aggressive towards other dogs. She is 5yo and is spayed, though she did have 2 litters when younger. She's housebroken, is good on the leash and basically is a great dog. I would love to keep her, but I live in a small 2 br apt. and she needs more room. The problem is this...she is 80% wolf/20% husky. I've tried rescue orginizations, but most are no longer operating due to financial or legal issues. I can't take her to SPCA because they have a policy to euthanize any suspected wolf/dog mix immediately. I cannot let her be put down just because she is a wolfdog...she is too good an animal for that.

What I'm asking for is any help locating no kill shelters or rescue org. willing to take her in. There is one locally, but he has 8 fosters and can't take her. All of them are full, if still operating...one has a 1-2 year waiting period. I live in California, approximately 2 hours south of SF on the central coast. Please, any help is greatly appreciated...she deserves a chance. Thanx for any and all help/advice/suggestions.

a dog like that probably has a waiting list of people waiting to get one. Have you tried talking to breeders? They would know people in the market for such a mix.

I've tried a couple...they say that right now, people just aren't getting any of the available dogs...plus Katrina has put a strain on all the places. It sucks that agencies just put 'em down for having wolf in 'em...say they're unpredictable. Actually from I've seen, she's MORE predictable becasue of the wolf. Wolves are social animals, and the only thing she does is every now and then try to push it a little trying to improve her status in the pack...normal behavior.

Got a lot of ideas, just running out of time.

Thanx for the suggestion Starforce, I appreciate it. :)

We live in Salinas Ca. in Monterey County...but I'll find a way to get her somewhere else if a home is found. ;)

The family is another teacher, Mr. M, at my dad's (Mr.G) school, so we should know tommorrow sandy. I didn't get to talk to my dad until today, but we emailed  Mr. M a link to this thread to his school email. He's super cool and he and my dad are good friends. I think Mr. M has at least 2 acres of land, so unless Mr M has another dog by now Id say the chances are about 50-50. My dad wasnt sure if he had or not. I showed my dad this thread and if he didnt already have 5 dogs he would take her in a heartbeat.

Prather is about a 3 hr drive from your place BTW, approx 25 miles east of Fresno.

Yep, Kyla Lu, to be exact, but just Kyla most of time. ;D Thanx a lot, LS, I knew this place could help...and you have proven again why this place is still around. ;D Even if it doesn't pan out, the effort is there, and I appreciate it. :) :notworthy:

No unfortunately he got 2 dogs from the same litter several months back, shame too as he told my dad that he would much rather have Kyla than the two he got.

Anyway my dad is going to ask every staff member at the school for us, still a good chance that we may find someone up there to take her, Lots of land owners up there everbody it seems is on at least two acres. This is in the foothills/mountains just south of Yosemite.

Meanwhile my aunt Suzie told me that a new no-kill shelter has been built recently in Fresno, and I will check out all those options here tommorrow. Our concern with that is it gets very hot in fresno in the summertime, sometimes 110° and that would be hard on her.

I got my family working on it, they know the time situation and we would take her if we didnt already have so many damn dogs, half of them are rescues.

I hope that any other californians or west coasters here can ask around, it would be a shame if Kyla cant find a home.

Thanx for your efforts LS...yes it would be a shame...she's a sweet girl. Lot of wolfy behavior, but I find that she's more predictable becasue of it.

Been in contact with a group called C.A.R.E., and they are chking...might be a few weeks, but if it finds her a home I'm willing.

It's a shame, just like with pits, everyone has misinformation about 'em and the suffer for it. Good lesson that some things are better left alone, nature being the biggest. Human folly causes more suffering than anything...maybe that's what Katrina and now Rita are supposed to show us. :-\
