Trouble logging in to D2
« on: September 10, 2005, 03:20:25 pm »
I read the how to's list, but when I go to the dynaverse II login I get the message "A firewall has been detected or you are not connected to the internet."
I am most certainly connected to the internet and my firewall software has been set to allow OP to have full internet access.  What am I doing wrong?

But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?

Turn off the firewall dammit!  >:(

Or allow pings, open ports 2300-2400 and 47624, and give the directplay helper the appropriate permissions as well as OP.

And for the love of God do not run Zonealarm and the Windows firewall simultaneously...

edit: sorry if I was short, we just get this a lot... its not as simple as just setting your firewall to allow OP access, and even if you do get your firewall set properly it can only introduce lag in multiplayer play and increase the likelyhood of dropping from missions and bugging things up in general...

Jebus bonk, you need a hug...
And a ukraining prostitute...
I'll mail one to you immediatealy after our hug...
I'm running McAfee firewall etc etc, I'm not seeing an option to simply shut the firewall down, and am unsure as to how to open up those ports- what do I put for the program , and can I open all those ports in one port configuration panel?
These firewalls are spiffy- only partially work, and stop you from doing anything cool on the internet.

It's ok Bonk, I'm here for you...

Thanks for the hug Clark, now let go, ok...  :D

I don't run the new McAfee stuff myself, you should find an option to disable the firewall somehere in the McAfee Central thingy as I recall... or perhaps you can disable and then exit it from the icon in the "system tray" (in the taskbar by the clock at the lower right). Definitely not familiar enough with the McAfee Firewall to be able to help with allowing pings or opening port ranges though...

Damn man, you have some hard nipples... and...
do you work out?
I exited the entire Mcafee thing from the task bar, and OP still tells that that It's detected a firewall or I'm not connected to the internet.

ewww, stop that!

Just exiting the taskbar icon will not do it, you must use that icon to disable it (right click it and disable the desired item), then exit.. as I recall...

I remember a friend having problems with this before, came down to uninstalling it... you might find the McAfee firewall listed seperately in the Add/Remove programs item in the control panel, then you could use the windows firewall when not playing SFC online...

Here is the manual for the McAfee Personal Firewall (Plus - the link to the non-plus pdf on their site is dead, but I suspect it is the same manual...), is that the one you are running?

http://download.mcafee.com/products/manuals/en-us/MPF_UserGuide_2006.pdf

edit: also, read this thread: http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163359567.0.html

edit#2: also, on first glance at that manual, you could just set the security level to "Open" while playing OP than restore it to wherever it was...

do so by:

Quote
1 Right-click the McAfee icon in the Windows system tray, point to Personal
Firewall, then select Options.
2 Click the Security Settings icon.
3 Set the security level by moving the slider to the desired level.
The security level ranges from Lockdown to Open:
...

And next time, RTFMS!!!!  ;)

Yeah, been to that thread and already installed the server thingy prior to this issue.  Also, do I need a gamespy account to get this to work?  If so, then I may have some trouble, since every time I try to log in to gamespy it says I don't have an account, but I get automated reposnes that I've already created an account everytime I try to make a new one.

Phew, glad you already saw that...

Yes, you will need a Gamespy account, they've been screwed up for about 2 years on their accounts now... something about proirity on nickmnames for paying customers, even if you already had that nickname... I now have six different gamespy accounts on six different e-mail accounts... just two more and I'll have one fo each SFC empire...lol...

I wonder if that might be the weak spot then since I haven't been able to log in to gamespy.  how long might this take?

The gamespy login problem will persist unless you use a different e-mail address than the existing bugged one... to create a new gamespy account.

The gamespy account issue is not be the reason for your firewall message however...

Riskyllama suggested it could be some sort of firewall setting in my DSL modem, since I have that plugged into the wireless router, which my Dell connects to wirelessly.
Man, waht a pain...

Yes, you'll need to establish that your DSL modem is not running a firewall, if so change it, also you will need to forward the appropriate ports to your client PC at your wireless router, also make sure the router is accepting pings from the wan side...

The new gamespy account will not make a difference if you are getting a firewall error.

What is the make and model for both your DSL modem and router?
