How to build a basic Saucer Tutorial (milkshape 101)

Pic1- under the models tab select sphere. Note the sphere options below circled in red. The default  is 6 stacks and 12 slices. I entered 12 stacks and 24 slices by typing that in.

The higher the number, the more poligons. The more poligons the rounder the saucer.     For SFC models you should try not to go over 4000 poligons for your entire model. I already have about 500 here for the saucer. I like round    For your 1st model- I wouldn't even worry about polies yet.

To make the sphere you simply drag you mouse in a window. The size doesn't matter at this point. Except you want it big enough so you can see what the hec your doing.

Pic2- The sphere should already be selected but I will show this step anyway. Still under model tab. Click select. I have another arrow by face down below. Either face or vertex would work for this. That may be another tutorial.  The main thing is to be certain that  the ignore back faces is unchecked.  Then simply drag a square around the shpere to select all faces.

Pic3-Up above in the tools section, click scale. Below you will see scale also with X, Y and Z.   X is width, Y is height and Z is length.  To start getting the saucer ship we need to bring the height down. What I do is put   .5   under Y.  X and Z must remain at 1.  If they are blank they will scale the sphere down to a staight line.   I clicked the scale button to the right of X,Y,Z twice.  When I started to get close to the shape I want I moved the Y value to .8 so it scales in smaller increments.

See the new shape of the shpere in red.

Pic4-to zoom it closer to better see for the next step. Right click in yoour work window and scroll down and then click on frame selection.

Pic5- click on select under tool section. For this part you need to click on vertex under selection options. Then drag your mouse to select the vertexes in red.

Pic6-more scaling  This is to give the saucer an edge.   Were scaling just a bit in the X and Z planes. Try doing it in just  the X to see what happens.  Leave Y at 1.    I hit scale 3 times and you see it brought the middle part of the saucer in a tad.

Pic7-selecting by vertex the bottom half of the saucer, exluding the very center.

Pic8- More scaling. This time in the vertical or Y plane.   Y is set to .8   Not sure how many times I click ed sacle.

Pic9- Using move for the 1st time. The most accuate way is to put a value in the direction you want to move. I used .1 increments in the Y plane until It was positioned as you see in pic.

btw  if I put  a minus sign   -.1  in the Y place , the vertexes would move down instead of up. This step makes the saucer flatter on the bottom, as they usually are.

Pic 10-  Thats all folks. Tune in next time for some more tidbits. Heres what we have so far. Hey, gotta start somewhere

This will come in handy. Saves a lot of trial and error slog work.

Well done James. Nice to see this happenign for SFC as well as Armada communities. Where would we be without the tutorial makers!!!!

BTW. James. Have you tried this method:

- Build half your model
- Texture the half you've built
- duplicate, mirror and regroup each section with its opposite

?? I'm only asking as it saves on two things. Time (as in only building and texturing half a model) and texture amount (have top/bottom saucer on one texture map instead of two).

BTW. This is also only a suggestion, as when I did my own tutorial I advanced from the last time I made it. Also I know this might not apply to the SFC community in completion but a large scale tutorial for Armada 1/2 was made by Steve "Westworld1" Westaby some time ago, and covers a hell of alot in depth especially for 3d max studio. Perhaps some could also benefit from that as well.

Hey James, if you can, put that into a zip file and send it to me...I'll put it up at my new site, which is almost done, in the tutorial section. Also, any other tuts you make.

Hey some good ideas here. Do you by chance have a link to the Westworld 1 tutorial. Also where do the Armarda gamers hang out.
