Did I just downgrade my vidcard?
« on: September 03, 2005, 04:21:02 pm »
From a 5600 to a 6200 256 Meg?

Easiest transition, but I'm wondering if it was the right move or not...

I'm not to hot on what the differences of the numbers are in the new series...

It's not a down grade but I'm not sure how much more power you are really going to get either.  IMHO I would have went with at least a 6800, but that is just me.  Hope it works out for you.

Thanks.  Next time I'll pay the extra hundred or so for the next card up.  I did contemplate about spending another couple hundred for the new 7600? (or is it 7500 or 7200, something like that), but decided if I was going to get a new computer in the next year or so why waste the money.  But after putting in the card (really easy by the way, Nvidia was a LOT easier than Ati for me) I started to realize it didn't seem better, and then started thinking about the numbering and wondering how the numbers of the 6000 and 7000 series work.  The biggest part was it got a tad jerky (Low FPS) during Republican Commando with high settings and I didn't think my former card had that, which was when I started thinking, did I just do something foolish?  Ah well, at least it still plays the games, or I suppose I could switch them back if I wanted to.

... Republican Commando...

 :o For real?

Myself, I'd go for the Parhelia, FPS FPS and benchmarks be damned, go for color accuracy and triple head capability!

Stop giving those bozos ideas, Bonk!

I want my (self-built) computer to last another three or four years... AT LEAST... without threat of obsolescence!  What, they think we're all rich or what?

I you're referring to this:

I'm afraid its already been done, over and over...  >:(

Unfortunately, that was probably the reasons I got the 6200.  I could get most games to run if I fiddled long enough with the old card, but then I ran into a brick wall.  No matter what I did for some reason I couldn't get Battlefield 2 to run on the other card.  It runs fine on the new one, but I have no idea why or what changed to enable it to do so.  I can't even figure out what I did so that it didn't run on the old one, much less why it now runs on the new one.  But at least it runs.

So after playing it for two battles with the new card, what did I do...

I started playing other games instead.

Addendum:  So I suppose I'm pretty stupid, all that for one game, and now one game that I'm finding I'm not really playing after trying it out!!!

BF2 is awesome... I would have gotten the 6600 instead of the 6200.

Yes BF2 is awesome, despite all the bugs.  I find myself spending a lot of time on the ranked servers.  I use the same screen name so if anyone ever finds me out there feel free to give me a shout, if your on the other team I'll try not to drop too much Artillery on your head.   ;D

Seeya and good hunting.

Okay, this will stand stupid...but I tried it again (I suppose I should put everything to low, takes forever to load it seems)...how do I call an airstrike and how do I get it to go where I want it to go?

PS:  Also, how do you take down aerial craft?  If I want to destroy artillery how do I do it?

Yes, I stink at this game right now, perhaps that's what makes it not quite as fun.  I got sniped off like every single minute while I played!

Don't feel too bad my 2.8Ghz P IV with a ATI 9800 256Mb feels like it chugs too.  Dice really pushed the hardware limits this time around.

With the default keyboard setup you can press [Enter] then click the Squad Tab.  Right click on the map where you want the Artillery to go.  This will send the request to the Commander, and that person will decide to drop the bomb or not from there.

Yes, I stink at this game right now, perhaps that's what makes it not quite as fun.  I got sniped off like every single minute while I played!

There are different ways to take down airplanes and choppers.  I've taken down a chopper with a M1 tank, but you can also shoot the pilot out of the seat with the unlocked sniper weapon.  Aside from that there are anti aircraft missile stands at different places on the maps that you can use to shoot down aircraft.  Be carefull though because if you lose missile lock on your target the missile while in the air can and will shoot down your own teams air craft.

You can blow up Artillery as will as the Sat and UAV trailers by placing two C4 packs on them and blowing them up.  Just make sure you get far enough away before you trigger them to blow.  You can also blow up bridges but they require three packs of C4.  Keep in mind that you don't get any points for blowing them up right now that will come in the next patch.  You get most of the points for C4 by throwing them on tanks, APC's, and choppers and blowing them up while the enemy is inside them.

Remember that most of these people know all of the hiding places by now and it is not going to be easy.  Plus the enemy Commander (if that person is any good) is letting their troops know where you are with Sat/UAV scans.  I can't count how many times I've sat watching the UAV scan waiting for the enemy to come around a corner so I can blast the junk out of them.

The next patch is suppose to allow for buddy and favorite server lists, hopefully when it comes out (if it ever does  ::) ) the Dynaverse people can get to gether for some squad fun.

I spend a lot of time on the Comcast/EA US servers if anyone wants to look me up.  Hope this helps and have fun.

When I upgraded from a 5200 to a 6600, I really noticed a difference in some games.  Delta Force Xtreme (get this Dash) can be run in full detail mode, while Rome Total War (Barbarian expansion pack comes out on the 28th!  But I digress) I can now run with all detail except desynchronized animations (troops still march in step).

With the C-4, I wonder if you could use it like an IED, set it where a tank or troops are likely to come, lie in the bushes and detonate it when appropriate.

IIRC, the C4 packs show up as red skull & crossbones, so you wouldn't drive over them.

WARNING- SMALL HIJACK DETOUR

Call of Duty takes QUITE A WHILE to load on an Athlon XP 2500+ system with a Radeon 9600 XT 128 Mb vid card.  It also has 1 Gb RAM.  I would have thought it should load in a hurry.

I'll try the Demo on the Delta Force Xtreme.

Thanks for the help with BF2.  Now I just need to learn how to avoid the snipers and figure out where they are coming from.

I don't think I'm a good enough aim with a tank yet to take out the aircraft, that will be something I'll have to work on.

C4 packs along with any other mine only shows up marked if they were dropped by someone on the same team.  Otherwise you won't see the Jolly Rogers over the mines.  But if you look closely you can still spot a mine laying in the road, but you have to keep a close eye on the road.  And yes you can use C4 like a IED, I've learned that the hard way...    ::)  :D

Well, tried my hand at commander...we lost...badly.  I haven't played Commander again after that.  I think I have to work on organization and how it works.  Perhaps I should play more before trying out to be a Commander again...

It takes time I'm still trying to get the hang of it myself.  Best thing to do is find a good commander and watch what he/she does on the mini map.  It will give you some idea of where the commander hides on a given map and how to handle the round.
