I have to say that IMO, the G2 should have been to the Phaser G what the ADD B is to the ADD A. Basically, double up the shots, but don't increase the effectiveness. So for X ships that would normally have Phaser G2s, just give them extra Phaser Gs instead.

SFC series has allways been advertised and promoted as being based on or adapted from SFB.

The problem is that they basically didn't do a good job, this being one of them. Advanced era games in SFC are a big, steaming pile of crap. What they basically did is they took the captian's edition rules and hacked those up (see G rack) but kept it at least within visual range if you get a telescope. However for the advanced era they adapted the commander, not the captians ruleset, which was horribly, horribly unbalanced. No idea why they went back 1 set of rules that was known to have severe problems (probabally because they thought it would be "cool") but they did. Add some "original thinking" on taldren's part and you start to get G2 phasers and other things that should never have been let out of the box in the first place.

Perhaps some year we'll have an implimentation of SFB on a computer (likely when damn paramount goes bankrupt unfortunately) that will include all the options that are in the board game, but I won't hold my breath as I wait.
