Get in "The Ring"?

Just checking... 10x10 map, no neutral hexes, F,H,M,G vs K,L,I,R, PvP only (no missions unless an enemy human is in your hex). Single ships, no fleets, no carriers, maximum CA class ships. Disengagement rule of 3 hours flat. No terrain VCs, PvP VCs only (kill thread). Map attached.

no need for a long disengagement rule? This is mostly a PvP D2 idea. You may not even need to mess with DV's or DV changes... I dunno. It's an awful tight space.

I'll give anything a try for a day or two. I've even run 15 or so missions on the Forge :D

I can't say that I'm that interested.   I doubt I would play.

Fighting against a human is MUCH more interesting than fighting against the AI.  However, preventing attacks from any hex that does not contain a human would take most of the fun out of the D2 for me.   It would prevent surprise attacks, deep strikes, and sudden shifts of focus.

Now, if you could use SQL to fix it so that a given hex becomes mine after I request a missions unless someone quickly comes to be my opponent, then we'd be talking.  And we still wouldn't have to fight any AI.  I don't think that's possible, however, given the game's code structure.

Naw, that wouldn't work.  If I logged on when there were no enemy online then I'd own the entire map in about 15 minutes.

I think the dull, reptetivie AI still serves a very important role on the D2.

Well yes, it lets you put a few in the "win" column

It does seem kinda..small.
I'm just curious- is there something to prevent Chuut + Soreyes from pulling an all nighter
and using their cheesy drone boats to flip the entire map?

Perhaps an automatic "Hand of Bethke" result if you laucnh more than 5 drones/mission

Someone would only have to login once every three hours to take them out in a CA.

Let me just set my alarm clock..
really maybe if you'd take a *little* time and code in the Hand/drone thing (I can't believe I never though of it before..)
we wouldn't have these issues.

How hard can it be?  :P

I did consider proposing a 24 hour logoff disengagement rule, but we just dont have the player numbers...

Not necessary as Chuut wouldn't be in the least interested in a server so lacking in stragetic options as Scipio pointed out.  If I want that kind of battle I'd go to GSA or the ladder leagues, which although fun for some have yet to hold my interest.

Only fun thing I could think of about that one would be constantly killing Hexx on his own planet each time he respawned in a replacement ship.

Dumbass... I wouldn't be allowed on my own planet after you killed me the first time

Hey, how about that!  Hexx has been replaced by a computer!

Though this horse is prematurely dead, note the part about no missions unless there is an enemy human in your hex... which would of course prevent this. Sorry I didn't think of it earlier today, as it is the correct response.

I'm losing motivation fast... so who wanted an SQL kit anyway? Or even a stable flatfile kit?

I voted no.  But do need to give a reason why.

Many D2 players jump on line at a time when there are a limited, if any, number of players on.  So it could get rather dull.  PvP is great, but if that is the only focus, then GSA fiills that niche rather well.

Good, bad, right, wrong ... D2 is about controlling the map, through all methods.

Everyone!   ;D ;D ;D

SQL is the holy grail of this game.  I'm dying for it.  The fact that I'm not interested in a server with no AI does not mean I don't want good PvP, and it doesn't mean I don't want all your other wonderful projects.

Hoi Folks,

Correct me if I am wrong here Bonk, but this mission availability feature would be part of a Fed & Emp style campaign. Other features would include the webmap and shipyards to complete the SFB feel of OOB. The style of play would shift from playing the map to playing the person/ships.  The disengagement rule allows for time to post your win, supply, and communicate with the fleet. Tracking enemy ship movements will become required to get a mission, you may not draft the other player, and end up flying against AI, but so long the defending ship lives you will get a chance at PvP.

I will do my best to show up for any server you run Bonk, as I want to see the finished product, and know that this is the only way to see if your puttering actually works.

Hidden map VCs would be good.

Take care

Thanks S'Cipio, your encouragement is much appreciated. I'll be sure to check out Squadron Commander this afternoon, I always enjoy your servers, even the toughest ones... ;)

Bonk:

Take this idea, and ship it over to Max Power / Bearslayer / those people that play the F&E campaigns with the online graphic map which fight the battles on GSA and ship them this deal.

Set most hexes to DV1, that flip direct to the winner.  They can arrainge the battles beforehand (like they are now), and fight them out on D2 instead of GSA.  No AI, webmap ship purchasing so that people can grab whatever ships they need for the battle.

This way, instead of having to maintain a separate map, they can use the D2 map (keeping the server up all the time), without fear that a punk like me can go on and beat up 20 AI and screw up their setup... ;)
