Hey! I got a problem with that article! The Swiss say we earn thousands more than 36k average? they do not listen to the Dept. of Labor? I guess that blows our analysis of NWAC's salaries out of the water, much less the analysis of raising a family in the U.S., eh?  ;D

At least in Texas, when the toll road is paid for, the booths come down.

Several city governments just approved making a toll road out of a big chunk of an existing road here - SH121.

LMAO @ Dracho's comment.

I hear ya Cayne, I may not go slower, but I can tell you I think about what is a good reason to drive the car nowadays. Those trips to 7-11 just for coffee? Not any more. Grocery trips are once a week, but I've always tried to do that in one shot as H.E.B. always seems to have a crowd, especially on the weekends. Joyriding just to get away and listen to some tunes while driving? That is definitely on hold right now.

Leda has picked up on it too, she visits her friends who live in north Austin much less and talks to them by phone instead.

For some reason though, I see a LOT of people driving around like there is no tomorrow, so I definitely see in Austin what you are seeing in the big D.

Cali is in definite need of more refinery capacity, and I do not understand it as many small petro and gas companies are HQ in Cali. Here is one example.

How about that, HQ in San Diego.

I also might add that for the first time since I've been to Mexico, our U.S. average prices have surpassed that criminally, corrupt Mexican company called Pemex in prices of gasoline.  :(

It could be, and has been, worse.

Quote
For the price of oil—not in nominal dollars but real, inflation-adjusted dollars—to surpass the record set in January 1981, it would have to be $86.72 per barrel. Last Friday it was $65.35. For headlines about "record" gasoline prices to be accurate, a gallon would have to cost $3.12. Last week the national average reached $2.55—less, in real terms, than in March 1981, when the price in today's dollars was $3.11. Or, for that matter, in 1935, when the price was $2.67. Which explains one of the least mysterious "mysteries" of the moment—why, in spite of "sky-high oil prices" (Fox News) and "skyrocketing" gas prices (CNN), people are, according to AAA, driving more.

I was not laughing at you, I was laughing at the hella no comment and stuff. My apologies.

The fundamental argument for higher oil involves increasing demand and inelastic supply. Increases in consumption, mainly in India and China, are estimated to result in a 5% per year increase for Asia's total consumption. Although there is domestic production of oil, of course, spare capacity rests with OPEC countries, particularly the low-cost producer Saudi Arabia, which is estimated to have a quarter of the world's oil. Saudi Arabia is now pumping 11 million barrels of oil per day, almost full capacity, so every small increase in demand has a big impact on prices. With demand increasing and supply already allocated, the price of oil will continue to climb.

The fundamental argument for lower oil is that there is plenty of oil. Americans consume around 20 million barrels of oil per day. This is a huge amount, but increasing only very gradually, at around 1% per year. Europeans consume around 15 million barrels per day, but growth in European consumption is also relatively stable. Asia now consumes about 18 million bpd (with China alone consuming more than 6 million). Due to technological advances and new discoveries, the world's oil supply, rather than dwindling, actually grows year after year. Supply problems, therefore, are ultimately short term. In response to greater demand, new supply is brought online. And if no new supply comes online, then demand slackens. Some analysts also argue that speculation is currently driving the energy markets. Oil is a bubble, they say, akin to the South Sea bubble, or the Dutch Tulip Mania -- the result of speculation and greed.

OK with all those words you just threw at me you are basically saying that at some point we are going to see a light at the end of the tunnel?

Oh and is it the end of the tunnel or is it that freaking huge freight train?  :-\ :P

Light? There is a headlight from the freight train coming right at us, IMO. It's simple math Alien. China has over 1 billion people, and a 5% yearly increase in fuel consumption? OMG, that is millions of users per year!  :( Let's not leave India out of the mix.

The U.S. has what? 260 million people plus the undocumented people? So for safety's sake let's say 300 million people? A 1% yearly increase is nothing compared to the percentage of China and India.

There is still oil, it's just going to be more expensive to drill it. ANWAR will not be the answer, neither will be IRAQ. When you deal with a unreplenishable commodity, it will run out sooner or later. We might not see it, but the next generation surely will, IMHO.

Here where we DON'T mock France: we should do as they have and INCREASE our nuclear power plants.  I think it is inevitable, so the sooner the better.

I have to agree with you on that one even though the thought of 'nuclear' gives me the heebejeebes.  Then again where the HEL do we put the slag when it'd done giving us energy?  Stupid to bury it as at some point we know something is gonna go really badly wrong and we pay for it big time.

There are alternative options out there.  We just have to have the tech to make these alternatives cost effective and more efficient.

More solar, better batteries, geo-thermal, wind, and even trash!  Come on lets get our brightest engineering minds on these problems!

1. Utah.

2. Those other methods will not generate the volume of power the modern world needs.  I can't (yet) see any way.

And in Mass, our educated senators, messieurs Kennedy and Kerry, have taken a NIMBY attitude against the Cape wind project. This project would place windmill towers 6-10 miles off of the coast and generate enough electricity for all of Cape Cod. However it would be near the area of the Kennedy Compound and therefore is unacceptable. I think these are the type of projects we should be developing.
