Gerneral Dyna Server ideas
« on: August 24, 2005, 11:34:35 am »
Hi all..

Well there are a few things I would like to see in future servers not all of it is easy to agree on so this can be just a general discussion forum for ideas.

1) Obvious and I think everyone will agree -- DAILY database clean.. useless AI markers didnt help anyone..

2) Tobin made a good suggestion to try a server with no Fed/Klingon ..allows for us all to try new ships ..new allies ...new wings and no guilt over doing so.

3) I am sure this is the idea that will have a ton of pro's and con's to it -- I would like one server with a 2hex draft radius..now thats easy for me to say because I love pvp regardless of the odds.. I do recognize that some changes would have to be made in the disengage rules. I haven't played dyna long enough to be on a server that had the 2draft radius in effect so I don't know the problems that were encounter..I am guessing there were a  lot? because nobody sets it up that way anymore.

Just some ideas.

2 Hex radius is bad for server but all the other ideas sound good.

2 Hex radius is bad for server but all the other ideas sound good.

We used to do it with a radius of one, but as I recall this created load issues on the server.  So now we do it with a radius of zero.

I'm wondering, with the lowerd player count these days, if radius one would work?

Or is there another reason we dropped radius one that I am not remembering?

As I recalled it
A) created the load you decribed
B) made any kind of "stay out of the hex rule" useless
C)  confused me greatly.

Ahh let me change my 2 hex to 1 == didnt realize it was set to zero -- makes sense now --

I can see where even a 1 hex draft may cause issues esp with some players not being able to connect to others ..

Like I said a forum for ideas..

How about:

1. An area for small ships only. A recent server had this (was it a Hexx server?) with actual strategic targets within this "restricted" area.
2. A server with a smaller map. Seems like most of the current maps remained unused due to size/time.
3. A large portion of the map with low DV hexes (say 1-4). Perhaps a large neutral zone/frontier type area. This would result in a more fluid feel to the game. Core areas could have high DV to represent the their strategic significance and the corresponding resources devoted by the respective empire.

I like the smaller maps Idea since our player numbers aint what they used too be.

Leave the radius as it is.

Make it with out Klinks and Feds.

And My ship get as many t bombs as I can get and transporters

Have the mirak then use klink or fed UI, so they can actually pause hit and runs like everyone else.

Okay.  Maybe I ought to put some more work into my Solinica server.

This is what I've got so far:

Feds and Klinks are destroyed, reduced to refugee status.  Not sure if each remaining race will get leftover Fed & Klink ships or if I'm going to anarchize up some Fed & Klink versions of each race's CAs / CWs.

There are 2 areas (WYN Cluster and Orion Enclave) that are going to be CW and smaller hull operation areas only.  Something about Pirates being afraid of heavy iron... ;)

I want the remaining races distributed by a pre-server sign up phase, teams will be arrainged in a manner to try to get the player numbers equal before the server start.  Not sure how to completely enforce this without making it a closed server...

Small map, long dimension is 40 hexes...

Stock T-bomb loadouts... :D

The idea was NO feds originally and then no feds and klinks, in hopes that we could balance numbers and allow or encourage people to fly other races.

The reason I'm saying what I'm saying:

1.  The Mirak are the only drone race, and odds are all the Fed & Klink droner pilots would fly Mirak because of that.  Also, this will lead to cries of "unfair hex flipping advantage".  By giving everyone "refugee droners", the argument is moot.

2.  Not everyone is comfortable with plasma, ESGs, Hellbores, etc.  In an effort to keep player participation high, I want an option of displaced Klinks / Feddies to fly with weapons they are comfortable with.

Now, whether I do it with a "refugee" system where races get an assortment of Fed / Klink ships, using them to balance the races (races with the most players get the Fed / Klink DDs, the least played races get Fed / Klink CAs), or I just "anarchize" the fleets to have a Photon, Dizzy-heavy and Drone boat CA, I haven't quite decided yet (though I'm now leaning more twoard the anarchist ships instead of moving the Fed/Klink ships around...

Anarchist system:
Each "Anarchist" ship will be relatively cookie cutter, as each will share the exact same loadout.  They are:
Anarchist Fed: 8xPh-1, 2xPh-3, 4xPhot, 1xG-rack (with associated AMD-6), 34 power, 4 batteries, Turn Mode D, etc. as a F-CAR+R
Anarchist Klink: 3xPh-1, 6xPh-2, 4xDis-3, 2xDro-B, 35 power, 3 batteries, turn mode B, etc. of a K-D7K
Anarchist Droner: 4xPh-1, 2xPh-3, 6xDro-B, 26 power, 2 batts, Turn B, 2/3 MC, CL hull.

Now, what makes it interesting is that the phasers will be kept in as close to "racial normal" as possible.  For example, on the I-CA:
I-CAfed gets Ph-1 pairs in FAL, FAR, FH, RH (takes 360 Ph-1 arc of stock I-CA), 1xPh-3 on each wing (LS/RS).  I-CAKlk gets 3xPh-1 360, PH-2s arrainged 1xFAL, 1xFAR, 2xLS, 2xRS.  Heavy weapons (phot/Dizzy) go in the CCs twin PPD mounts, drones / AMD go in the Pl-I slots.

Now, this gives some "line" ships that people can fly, and each race will have them.  This should hopefully encourage further Fed / Klink spreading amongst all 6 races, so that feds can fly with klinks and fight other feds, klinks can fight other klinks while winging with feddies...

This may be something right out of left field, or it's been done already...

Have an all-Pirates server.

Sorry, I don't know their shortcomings Dyna-wise, (pardon me if the answer's already a definite "no", but otherwise hear me out) but I seem to recall hearing there being some kind of correlation bug. If VC's are employed where it might not matter, perhaps it could be theoretically possible. There seems to be a general ideal to do something untried before, and this approach sounds like a sure way to get out of the rut we've confined ourselves to. I'm well aware they can't very well go toe to toe with ships of the same value from the Empires, but compared to each other, they do seem to balance out well.

My idea, the 8 factions eventually form two conglomerates, each comprised of four smaller ones, and duke it out for control over the whole quadrant underground.

Actually there's a pirate server in the works

Their shortcomings are that (imho) they're boring- not because of any ship ddesign
flaws , but that most of the weapon options I've seen are just weird.

I think that's what makes them interesting. They don't employ the typical heavy/phaser loadout, and in many cases have 3 different heavies not usually grouped together. Also, the pirate scenario provides the perfect setting to mix up the player pool as well as break away from the familiar to take on the challenge of something out of the usual standards.

BTW, I'm pleased to hear it's in the works :D
