CD key question
« on: August 17, 2005, 01:46:07 pm »
Ok for those whgo know --

A) Down the road I will arrange to get a second copy of OP shipped up to me from a friend down in the states. I know Sam's Club was selling them for only 6 95 american so how can i loose bying a second copy for Duck Jr to run on his system and then we can fly together. (err,  or I can kick the snot out of his punk ass if he is on the wrong side )..however

Talking to a buddy on the phone today who no longer plays OP -- he gave me his CD key over the phone..

Question is -- if i use my original CD to install the game on my son's computer and use my buddies CD key (for now) will it allow matt to get online at the same time as me -- or will the new CD key conflict with my disk being used to install the game?

Thanks Duck

You'll be fine in that sense with the CD key. you might have a hard time though having both of you connect at the same time if your sharing an Internet connection. I believe someone else might have a better answer on that part though.

The router isn't the issue. The issue is that to the Dynaverse, it will appear as if a single computer is attempting to connect twice, as all the requests will come from the same IP address.

Correct (kind of), one Dynaverse connection per public IP address. (Directplay port forwarding is required - ports 2300-2400 and 47624 - and the ports can only be forwarded to one client PC on the lan) Most broadband ISP's will provide additional public IP addresses for an addtional $10 per month each or less. Just use a hub or simple switch instead (or use the router as just a switch by connecting the modem and two PCs to the lan side) if you want to go that route. There are complicated pptd solutions but they are laggy and impractical.

Ok getting  a bit lost here -- I thought the router baiscally assigned a fake IP ?? so we could both get online -- I belive that I do indeed have the option of a second IP for 10 per month will have to look into that for the next server if its the only option..

That being said BONK can you go into more detail -=- as I do happen to have a hub at home from my DSL days prior to cable... I know using DSL we could both connect to GSA at the same time. From what you guys are saying the Router will show that were using the same IP and cannot connect at the same time..if there is a way for me to connect via cable without buying  a second IP that would be sweet.

Either post here or email me details at ShadowLord31@hotmail.com

No. A router goes and gets the public IP address from your ISP. That device is what has that public IP. Behind it, devices connected to the router are assigned private IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x range. Your ISP, and everything else out on the net never see what's behind your router. They just see the public IP address that is assigned to the router.

Do you have a backup Phone connection? If you do your son could log on using that while you log on using your BB.

Good idea but -- I wont inflict another 56K on this community -- for the sake of all -- it would just be easier to fork out the extra $$ .

You can both play, just not be able to be in the same mission. It sucks. That's what always stopped me & Karl playing on a weekend on the LAN.

I run 2 systems through a switch, with 2 IPs. I pay the extra 10$ per month for this and it is well worth it for the sake of being able to do the same thing at the same time.  Unfortunately my son does not play Dyna, but does GSA, and with us on 1 IP we could not play vs or team up even on GSA.  With the second IP, all is fixed.  One other advantage so far is that if anytime one system gets hacked, the other is free and clear of the first.  It also gives us a LAN system where we can have friends bring over laptops and hook them all together to play LAN style while sitting together.  But yes, it does cost 10 whole dollars per month more.   :'(

Checked with rogers cable and I can add a second IP online --

What type of switch or other hardware will I need? As previously mentioned I am already using a Dlink router -- and I belive I have a Hub lying around at home as well.

You'll need to use the hub without the router. It's fairly simple really. However, you might want to get a switch instead. A switch handles data more intelligently than a hub does.

Ok I think I have this all figured out but it might not be in place for this server ..

Step A – take my kids computer and the wife’s computer and connect them both into my router.  Put the  kids computer into the DMZ for dyna games. Then plug the router into the HUB
Step B -  go into Rogers Cable  site and order a new second IP addy. (9.95 a month)
Step C – shortly after ordering the second IP plug my computer directly into the HUB and have it detect the new available IP ..may have to do a little TCP/IP config to release its old settings and detect the new.

Technically this should work fine – however it would be even better if I get a switch to  provide better distribution of packets.

I think that should do it – however it may not happen this week as I have to dig up my HUB from our last move.

Any additional comments please go ahead and post.

basically it.  I have my line going to my modem, modem to switch, switch to each computer.  Works great for me.  2 IP, 2 comps.
