How do you uninstall MSN explorer?
« on: August 17, 2005, 09:57:56 am »
Its not listed in the add/remove programs and has no uninstall shortcut. (I accepted its install some time ago as a necessary component of the MSN gaming zone to help my nephew out... The MSN explorer did not uninstall with the MSN Gaming Zone)

This is ticking me off good!  >:(

(I thought Clark might appreciate the irony of this...)

Have you tried this bonk?

Some people do not want to use MSN Messenger for chatting and would like to remove it from their computers. With Windows XP, this is not always so easy.

Also, with MSN installed and enabled, new XP users may find themselves annoyed with those horrible popups for various advertisements which tell them to "click here to remove these ads". Well, most of us are afraid to "click here" because we fear we will be added to some advertising database and swamped with S P A M (and rightly so).

So, here are two tips: One to get rid of Messenger completely and the other to keep Messenger but get rid of those annoying popups (which come from those nice people at Microsoft Messenger, believe it or not):

Uninstalling MSN Messenger Completely

This one comes from About.com:
"I know it sounds hard to believe, but some of you out there may wish to remove MSN Messenger from Windows XP. However, it does not appear from the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.

In order for it to show up there, you must first edit the file named sysoc.inf. This file can be found in a folder named INF, which is a subfolder of the Windows folder (or in some cases the winnt folder, depending on how your OS was installed).

You can open that file in notepad. Look for the following line:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
and remove the word "hide" while leaving the commas on place. Close and save the file, and then open the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, so that you can remove it like any other program."

To Get Rid of the Annoying PopUp Ads:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel (or point to Settings, and then click Control Panel).
2. Double-click Administrative Tools.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Double-click Messenger.
5. In the Startup type list, click Disabled.
6. Click Stop, and then click OK.

Well it let me delete the MSN messenger folder, but I had to do a safe mode boot to delete the MSN gaming zone folder, then windows recreated it on a normal boot...  >:(  Grrr!

Hmm, can you go into RegEdit while in safe mode, to remove all calls to MSN explorer?

How do I remove MSN Messenger from Windows XP

If you are looking to remove MSN Messenger from your Windows XP machine, chances are you can't find it in the Add/Remove programs within the Control Panel. One way to uninstall it is to run a command from the Start | Run.

Warning: This will completely remove MSN Messenger from your computer and will not prompt you. MSNemotions.org is not responsible for any problems this may cause with your computer. Use at your own risk.

The command you need to run is the following:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Note: Make sure MSN Messenger is not running when you run this command as some files will be in use and you will most likely experience some error messages which could prevent MSN Messenger from being removed properly.

See that's what I came up with, But It appears that Messenger and explorer arn't the same things. I wonder though If they are tied into one another?

I think Internet Explorer is tied into Windows Explorer... and thus cannot be removed.

Finished some campaign and webmap work (additional terrain types for artifex and the webmap code - testing on the first hex column of The Forge webmap - hexes 0,0 to 0,27 - strings are in, need to add images), currently working on compiling the GeoIP C API for Windows Server 2003, so we can run the GeoIP plugin for AWStats. Still gonna come back to this for a bit of a break before I do the photoshop work for the additional terrian types...   ;D

OK, I finally got GeoIP setup to run (the PurePerl version, to avoid compiling the c api... too much work...) got a test script written and learned a little something about scripting for perl on a webserver too!

Now I'll take a look at this set of instructions to finish purging my machine of MSN by removing the Gaming Zone folder...
