Texture Request, Registry free Saucer
« on: August 17, 2005, 06:40:15 am »
Hello all, is there anyone out there with Registry-free FDD textures?  I'm messing with the stock FDD textures trying to make it look more like TNG-era Tech.  I've put a registry number on the Nacelles, but it's a little wonky with the Akula registry all over the saucer.

There are several saucer blanks over at Battleclinic.

Hmm...sweet.  But I didn't find an FDD there when I searched for blanks.  I'd decided to make my own earlier this morning.

I used Paint, which is really all I have.  I had to copy some hull panels from elsewhere on the saucers and fit them over the registry.  I think it's pretty seamless, considering I was watching an Icons about Shigeru Miyamoto while I was doing this.

Later!

Wow, pretty damn nice work.  I'm starting to wonder what those stock textures would look like on decent models.  Hmmm......

I've remade the models for the Okinawa, Akula, and Ulysses class ships and used the stock textures on them.  They're not as good as some other people's work, like Wicked Zombie's ships, but they're definitely better than the stock SFC2 ships.

This may sound weird...but I kinda like the stock ships...they're...'stocky'...o_0=
And they don't take up much space, which is nice...which reminds me...

Is the stock Akira in SFC3 the same size as a light cruiser in SFC2?  Every Akira mod I've downloaded is the size of a dreadnaught.
If it is, is there a URL to download stock ships?

If the Akira were to be compared to TMP ships, I believe she would be a bit bigger than the Excelsior, if not roughly the same overall size.

Ahh, I see.

I guess I'll just an FDD model with my Revere-B texture, whenever I get SFC3.

Hope that helps.

i was alwazs hoping someone would do some lower poly fed ships like mr tricorder did. with the stock textures they fit well into the stock game wich helps doing a mod without having to replace all the ships.
the stcok klingon academy ships were better than the stock sfc ships. i know darkdrone converted them but i have lost them a long time ago. therradyne hase some cool ships for a2

http://www.terradyhne-yards.de/Klingoninfo1.htm

http://www.terradyhne-yards.de/Romulaninfo1.htm

http://www.terradyhne-yards.de/Tholianinfo1.htm

im still hoping he will convert them to sfc2 once his a2 mod is done. or at least the oberth, anubis, miranda,
constitution, constellation, excelsior, sydney, maya, ournal and all the alien ships.
since a2 requires low poly models these ships would probely run quite smoothly even on low end mashines.

ed :D

btw - these ships look pretty good mr tricorder!

Thanks.  The Ulysses was the first ship I made.  I started working on that one before I even knew how to apply textures.  Looking at it now, I can see several mistakes, but it's still a good first ship.  The Okinawa and the Akula model are each under 1000 polys, so they work great as stock ship replacements for people who are running SFC on older, slower machines that can't handle some of the high-detail models or for people who don't want to take up a lot of hard drive space with new ship models.  I was following Taldren's SFC3 modeling guide pretty closely when I was making these.  They are each one whole mesh that encloses a contiguous empty space (except for the fins on the warp nacelles), instead of several parts attached together like most ships are made (and how I make them now).  The Okinawa and the Akula were each made almost entirely out of a single cylinder.

its a pity that in most star trek games the fed ships look less detailed than the alien ships.
in sfc for example the stock merinda had a brigde module modeled and the naceles were better shaped than on the conny while the conny and akula had a modeled sensor dome wich the merinda lacked.
some ships had those details some didnt - wich looked even more silly when they apeard in fleets.
the alien ships often had better textures - the gorn x ships for example. and because they didnt have such complicated hullshapes they looked better as a model compared to the feds.
i love all the models shown on this board with all their detailing and so on - but personaly - i was always looking for some more simple models - with the all basic details like bridge and sensor domes - and dot as boxy as some stock models.
a good example for the level of detail im talking about is cleeves constellation or mr tricorders ships.
currently i use p81 ships - most from the d2 mod with 256x256 textures reduced to 256 colors. take a lot less space and is hardly noticible in game. but now the models look a bit closer to some alien ships wich dont have replacement models. im working on a closer to canon mod of the game and sometimes it looks just stupid - some full blown fed models fight some butugly gorn, isc hydran ships.
often there are some cool models - but no bases , repairdocks shuttles.
often i end up putting the worst models out of game and replace them with retxtures or kitbashes wich look somewhat better. thu11s made exelent romulans and isc ships but his gorn ships are on the same level as the stock ships even if they are closer to sfb. atolm has some cool fleets as well but most ships lack hardpoints an breakmodels. however - i think its part of the fun to wait and see what models are done next.
and im actually pretty happy that sfc isnt forgotten yet.

I think we're more critical of the stock models that represent familiar ships than the others.  Every Trekkie knows exactly what a Constitution, Miranda, and Excelsior class ship is supposed to look like, so any mistake, simplification, or omission in the model is blatantly obvious.  I think all of the stock models are about on the same level of quality, but the blocky Fed ships tend to be more of an eyesore because we cast such a descriminating eye on them.
