What do ya think about Xandros?
« on: August 19, 2005, 12:34:57 pm »
As my discontent with Microsoft grows, I've been thinking about playing around with Linux.  Someone on the STGU forums said that they were able to use SFC1, 2, and 3, Bridge Commander, and Armada 1 and 2 on Xandros.  I just wanted to get some opinions about Xandros from here too.

I've not even heard of it?

Me either... runs SFC2 you say?  :o

edit: Firesoul and Transgaming would be most interested to hear of this. I understood that the limitations of WINE on Linux were such that multiplayer SFC2 would just not work due to an incomplete emulation of Directplay7...

And I 'm a little leery of a company asking for money for their Linux Desktop environment...

Here's the thread at STGU where we were discussing it.  The thread was originally about Windows Vista.  http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~starmada/forum/showthread.php?t=7037
Also, here's the Xandros website.  http://www.xandros.com/
It uses Crossover Office 4.1 which is the successor to WINE in the area of Windows compatibility.

Ok, I've been doing some research and I'm going to try it out.  There are several versions of the Xandros distro of Linux.  There's the Open Circulation Edition for free (which I'm going to try), the Standard Edition ($49.95), the Deluxe Edition ($89.95), and the Business Edition ($129).  The Open Circulation Edition and the Standard Edition come with a 30 trial version of Crossover Office while the Deluxe Edition and the Business Edition come with the full version.  Crossover office can be purchased separately ($39.95 for Standard Edition of Crossover Office and $79.95 for Deluxe Edition of Crossover Office).  The Open Circulation Edition is also limited to 4x CD burning (unless you use a 3rd party program) and no integrated DVD burning like the other versions have.  It also doesn't have built-in anti-virus or firewall like the other ones have.

Well, I installed it today and I've run into my first serious problem.  I don't have sound.  It turns out that this is a fairly common problem with most versions of Linux.  Hopefully I can get this taken care of soon.  As soon as I do, I'll report back with how well it runs SFC games.
