Universe at War download issues.
« on: August 12, 2005, 09:48:17 pm »
I'm having one hell of a time getting the Universe at War mod to download.  I tried it three times from the mirror listed on www.universeatwar.org/cjones  and each time i tried to run it, all that happened was a black window opening for less than a second.  Then I tried it one last time from the main site listed for download.  At 74% it stopped and listed itself as completed.  Needless to say it didn't work.  I'd like to try this mod but I'm rapidly getting frustrated with spending an hour or more each time getting this 630 MB file.  The official patch came through with no problem from the mirror site.  Can anyone help me or should I give up hoping for this Chris Jones mod?  I'm hoping there's a  solution since I've loved absolutely everything Chris has done so far.

--Thanks, all!

Its a download manager, but I reccomend:

http://www.stardownloader.com/

Direct download of free version: http://www.download.com/Star-Downloader-Free/3000-2071_4-10346403.html?tag=lst-0-2

Which I know to be spyware free.

EDIT: it appears to reject script linked downloads (such as those on Chris's site - sorry! But it is handy for most directly linked downloads)

You will also find the older first release UAW files posted here (larger - in two pieces):

So, I can get the older version of UAW at the site listed in your last post above?  Cool.  Forgive my tech-dummy question, but, the links to Star-Downloader, how would I actually go about using it?  Also, will I find the older version of UAW under the same name, or was it differently named in its first version? Will the official patch Chris(t) has for UAW work with the older version?  Thanks tons and tons for the pointers for a non-computer usin' gal like me.  As my father said, watching me try to work the computer is like watching a monkey trying to f*** a football.  (Yes, it's an exact quote.  Good ol' dad, soul of wit and sophistication.)

Hehe, you're dad has quite the sense our humour!  ;D

The official patch should work on the older version (I applied it on my install). You'll need both the large UAW files there, both the rar file and the exe. I forget the procedure, but I'll dig for the original post...

WARNING: Back up your OP folder before installing UAW or be prepared to uninstall/reinstall OP when you're done with it.

If you do not have WinRAR (to decompress rar archives) you can obtain a trial version here:  http://www.rarlabs.com

Stardownoader is pretty self explanatory - download it, install it, and it will provide you the option to integrate with your browsers so when you click a download link, stardownloader will pop up and ask you where to save it. (but does not work for scripted downloads - just directfile links) The default options for it should work fine, but there are plenty of tweaks in the options.

Would I still need to back up my OP files if I'm using the Enhancement Package v 3.2 with its Mod Chooser function?

And how, exactly, does one back up the files?  Which files?  And back up to where?

I really need to take a computer class.

Correction, (sorry) you only need the rar file as I recall (this was a while ago). I think the exe here is another compressed version of it.

Yes, one would still need to backup even if using the mod chooser.

(on XP) Start... run... explorer...browse to C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc (under My Computer - assuming you installed OP to the default location) in the right side of the window, right click the "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates" folder and copy, then right click on white space in the same pane on the right and select paste... it will create a copy of the folder called "Copy of Starfleet Command Orion Pirates" which you can then use to restore your original install when the time comes...

If that is not clear, then you're probably best off to do an uninstall-reinstall when the time comes.

I had promised Chris to do a full NSIS installer for UAW some time ago, then real life got in the way... hopefully I can find the time to get to it but I'm connecting at 28800bps now so it would take days/weeks to upload or download anything of that size...

The history of UAW can be gleaned by going over this:
Latest posts of: Chris Jones

Hopefully Chris will be along soon to clarify the situation for you.

Good to hear you got it working!  You're most welcome.  ;D

Its quite a fun mod.   (The Dominion can be real buggers as I recall too...)

A few follow up questions if you don't mind...

Did you download the mod from here? Did you use the Star Downloader?

(I seem to recall that the exe posted here is the sounds... Or are you getting modded sounds already? They add a lot to the mod, Chris and others put a lot of effort into it.)

I gotta get an NSIS installer put together for it, would squash it down in size for download and make the install/uninstall simple.  I'd need an upload manager to do it over 28.8 though...  :D

hehe - glad you're enjoying it -

Bonk - UAW is in beta - If we can add the last upcoming 'patch' to your file that would be cool - I'll keep you informed..
I would give you my home adress to maybe send a CD so I can upload it over DSL - how big's the file? The upcoming patch would be maybe 5 meg - mostly spec and strings changes..

Sounds reasonable. I cannot give an estimate on the installer size really, I have to install the mod with your files and updates, identify all the final component files of the mod, reassemble them in another folder, then construct the installer/uninstaller.

But, I am unemployed at the moment and the jobhunt gets priority (of course), then for SFC stuff, the OP serverkit development project gets top priority followed by my SQL webmap/shipyard and battle reporting and OoB interface, then an NSIS UAW installer and finally a new version of SFB-OP.

No definite promises, and it might be a while, but I'd like to do this.

Howdy.  Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner.  To answer  your questions:

1.  I downloaded the mod from the link you very kindly provided.
2.  I'm pretty sure I've got the modded sounds as I recognize lots of them from DS9/TNG shows and TMP-era movies.
3.  Honestly, I was afraid I would critically screw something up using Star Downloader; so I didn't use it.  (Sorry.  It's just a reflection of my total lack of competence in the digital world.)
