Fricking lag
« on: August 01, 2005, 06:59:01 am »
Ok so I have been doing great on the server then the last 36 hrs went to hell -- lag queen duck

Lost 3 KRC's not all due to lag but it is safe to say that it did affect the game -- and started hearing the other side comment about my lag issues..

Knowing the rules and Jinns comment about lag issues -- well I removed myself from the battles on both Sat and Sunday night ..

Did several anti virus scans and did some spy-ware scans..

However I dont belive that was the lag problem -- I belive it came down to my ethernet  cable ..I pulled out the one I was using and tried putting in an older one -- then playtested this AM with skyflyer -- no lag issues...

Christ what a pain in the arse..

So while I now belive I have the problem resolved -=- should any of you have other ideas to minimize lag may as well post them here for everyone.

The steps I used were..
A) Anti Virus scan
B) Spy ware scans
C) Ended every  programm running in background of computer that wasnt needed
D) Checked for packet loss and speed test on computer
E) Rebooted modem and router
F) finally got around to checking cable and eathernet cable  -- I belive thats where the problem was

I have what is supposed to be a good Linksys router, I have the firmware updated, and I have all the proper ports forwarded without resorting to using a DMZ.  However I find that I connect with people a lot better if I take out the router and plug my game machine straight into the modem.  This is especially true with dial up users, whom I can' t seem to connect to at all when I'm using the router.

When I'm done playing I hook back into the router so other members of the family can get to their machines.  Hopefully you won't have to do this, but it is something to think about if you have more problems.

Ok without doubt my issues was 100% the eathernet cable itself -- I used an old one did a few missions today pvp -- things were not only much cleaner but almost perfect -- I will go and pick up a new small (like maybe 1-2 foot cable today ) and should be totally clean again..

Sorry to those who had the to live in a JUMP infested game with me the last 36 hrs..

Cable connectors and connections are more likely to be an issue than a cable "going bad".  Cables get yanked on, tripped over, etc - have to watch them.  Another thing is that having your cable going near a fan or other electronic device can induce "garbage" into the cable - and interfere.  Radio noise comes from about anything that is electronic and can get into other things and cause trouble - watch for this stuff too.

So Duck, when you went to the store to get a new cable, did they put it on your bill?

hope Duck has no disaBILLitating problems, it could have taken a long time to get to the store and back.

Ah, crap.  I'm sorry I brought it up during our match, I didn't mean anything by it.  I can explain.

What I was experiencing on my end was every few seconds, there was a minute pause and our ship distances would also 'jump'.   While we were on the border it was causing you to 'hop' about 1.5 closer to me per burp, and since I've died because of being tractored lately, I mentioned it and disengaged.

That's all.  It wasn't really all that bad, just enough to make someone within 10 of you nervous  :gg:

I had it happen in my match with Duck also, he used it to his advantage
by making me think he was about to hit 3.99 with my ESG's when he was actually about 5 away.

Really that's the only reason I could think of that he was beating me at the end of the match...

Good to hear there are no lame duck excuses... well... except for Hexx.

Though I will admit, watching your KRC move away in one direction, then have a plasma G & plasma F come at me from another direction (in a 1v1 mission!!!) can be a bit disconcerting....

I guess now that he has fixed his cable, he'll be flying south.   ;D

And here I thought the KHH has prefected some kind of transportation device.    I'm glad to hear it was just lag.

Further comments

Had a few PVP games with no lag yea ---- lets hope it stays that way..

Paladin it wasnt your comment that made me do all this -- i had already been checking into to for a day before you..it was more Jinn;s rule where -- without bothering to look up the exact quote he

"Requests that those who have lag issues stay away from the front lines to avoid causing drops etc for others"
Umm -- well thats a great rule and after having x number of missions with lag that didnt help me or the other players well it was just time to FIND OUT WHAT THE HELL was wrong with my system and get it fixed ..after all I hate flying alone and I hate hours of hex flipping..

Have to admit there are some funny comments on this post -- and some that gave me a nice smile like Hexxipoo's comment..
