Fighters! What aaarree they good for?

Howdy all.

     Is there some comprehensive list that lets you know which fighters do what?  I'm just getting into using them in the Advanced OP Enhancement 3.2 for the Federation.  (Good god those Romulan interceptors are nasty!)  So far I'm enjoying flight deck operations, but I'm hampered by not knowing anything about specific fighters.  I will admit to being impressed by the Raven JII fighters.  Yikes. 

Also, how can I change the Romulan starting ship in the single player campaign?  I have had no luck beating anything more than police ships with the SNB (power 9, two plasma F, one plasma G, two phaser 1, two phaser 3).  Or am I just taking the easy way out?

 There is read me file in your SFC OP dirctory that explains all the fighter or you can go into your  assetts/specs fighter list and read it from there.I hope this helps.The read me file is in word it is manual additions in Taldren Software Oroin Pirates folder.

Go to "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\MetaAssets\ServerProfiles\SinglePlayer" and open the file "ship.gf". It opens with any text editer (word, notepad, etc.)

Change the MinBPV and MaxBPV to higher numbers (I highlighted the lines to help you find them). That'll give you a bigger ship at the beginning of the campaign.

Age: That version of Manual Additions is only in EAW, not OP.

Skinny: Here is a copy of the file Age is talking about as well as stats for the PF's added in OP+ (in two posts, damn character limit!). Note that there is some missing/incorrect info in there, such as the Vulture II has a PH-3 that isn't listed. If you want a really good look at fighter loadouts you need to look in the fighter list using Excel or some other spreadsheet application.

NOTE: where Shots or missiles are given, this number is per weapon or rack.  For example 2xPhoton, Arc FH, Shots 2, indicates that there are two photon launchers each having 2 shots for a total of 4 photon torpedoes.

My experience with fighters in SFC2 has ranged from awe too maddening frustration.  Basically, they can deal incredible amounts of damage but their flight control has always been more than a little buggy.  Everything from them stopping dead in space for no reason, NOT firing their weapons, firing from really long range when you told them to attack (this is the most frustrating), or just not responding to orders.  However, when they do unleash from appropriate range, the result is usually a near instagib.   ;D

My personal fav are the ISC Caveat III's.  I've seen just two squads completely criple (im talking 30% hull left) a DNT in one pass!  Other times, they fart around and take 5 minutes to fire! ???

Pretty much all of the races top fighters/pfc's are very deadly though when the moons are aligned.

ISC Caveats

I don't like PF's much except for scooting aorund (flying one yourself).  But I havent done that in a long time since I blew out my hotkeys.  Speed defeats the plasma bearing PF.  F torps at speed 31 are nearly as bad as Fusion.

I guess in campaigns they are still useful.  But in campaigns they (PF's) used to cost too much...more than fighters...but couldn't deliver the kind of "punch" I was looking for.  They were fragile too and got blown up too much meaning you lost prestige fast.  With Gorns (my usual race) they were the worst because most of the Gorn mother ships are marginal warfighters.  ROMS are better for that in the carrier category.  Lyrans are the best PF fighter ships because some of their top 1v1 ships also have fairly cheap fighter variants PLUS their fighters can hit from range with disrupters. 

Regular fighters like Hornets and ravens I have no problem using because they can deliver some damage in a hurry.

Is the Rom SNB supposed to be so underpowered? It makes playing Romulan in your early missions miserable, and is probally turning the race sour to new players. Trying to stay alive in the POS. :P :P :P

I've found with the SNB that the cloaking device can be very useful (perhaps more so than on any other ROM ship). I would also be alert for where friendly ships are (zoom all the way in on the galactic map), and if you are still running low on energy, consider using F instaed of G torps. Also, your shields are quite a bit tougher than most of your opponents.

As for the SNB, ya its a POS, but most of the early Rom ships are.  You got to remember that the designs of those ships are decades old (late 22nd century) so they have a harder time dealing with later era ships.  Their only saving grace is that most (even the SNB) have fairly good sheilding and their plasmas.  And you GOT to use ther cloaks effectivly.  These early Rom ships without there cloaks are pushovers (i.e. SNA is a good example with no cloak).

If I recall correctly, select the desired PF as the target while in its tender and hit ctrl-backspace, to return to the tender, target it and hit ctrl-backspace. Mucho fun!  ;D

Won't help a bit as a downgraded F costs more to charge than a normal G and their holding costs are the same at 1 point. A normal F costs 1.67 per turn for three turns and a normal G costs 2.3 per turn for three turns. A downgraded F costs 2.5 per turn for two turns, so is more expensive per turn than a normal G. The only reason to downgrade to F's is if you want them to arm faster, but if the object is to save power, G's to F's isn't the way to do it.



And Bonk-

That is correct except you don't have to hit control. That hotkey can also be remapped if desired. It is named "Quick Jump".
