I just bought a new Logitech optical mouse to replace my completely ass-tastic Microsoft optical mouse which never really worked right. From day one it had a tendancy to randomly jump around the screen every once in a while (I bought that mouse almost a year ago to replace my original mouse, an older Microsoft optical mouse that I had for three years and never had a problem until it suddenly stopped working). My new mouse behaves fine except the scroll wheel won't work at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Install the drivers?

Try logitechs website for the latest ones.

That's all I can think of, other than a defective mouse.

With an optical mouse, make sure you dont have a shiny, multicolor reflective mousepad - it can cause the laser to think it moved a ton which causes the onscreen cursor to jump around.

The mousepads that come with dell pc's are atrocious for the above reason. (Work bought PCs)

I have a non-shiny mouse pad that is mostly black with pictures of some planets on it. Also, I've tried using that mouse on the desktop, which has a woodgrain pattern and is not highly reflective. I did not have a problem with the old mouse until it just died and the one I just bought doesn't jump around either.

I installed the drivers from the CD that came with the mouse. I'll try going to the website and see if I can find anything there.

Do you happen to know the model number of your mouse?

I have a logitech MX510, that I use for Gaming, and It rocks. Data Transfer speed, Precision pointing for FPS's, plenty of programable buttons.

Also is there a possible conflict with another Device? are you using a USB port, or the standard mouse port?

Just trying to get some more info , so hopefully I can help you out.

I installed the software from the website (which didn't look any different from the software on the disc) and it works fine now. I was debating whether or not to tell you because I love some of those suggestions. I've actually tried the desk thing before (not with a full-size desk, though).

The mouse is not really fancy. It's just the Logitech Click! Optical Mouse. It has the standard two buttons and wheel that can be used as a third button and one extra button for switching between open windows, but I can set it to do other things if I want. I don't really care for the mice with extra buttons because I'll keep accidentally pressing them and I don't like cordless mice because either I'll lose the darn thing or somebody will run off with it or hide it as a joke. As long as it's optical, has a wheel, and works, I'm happy.

Cool beans then. I'm glad you got It working. I was the same way for along time with Optical mice. I also don't care for Cordless, although I did use a cordless keyboard /Mouse for about 6 months with SFC2:EAW. It was just so I could lay back and play from my couch.

Ah nice to see logitech is providing thier drivers for free again... or did you have to provide proof of purchase to download?

...good ol "em_exec"...

I refuse to use optical mice, the precision and control is just not there, I prefer cleaning the finger grease off my old fashioned ball mouse every so often, infinitiely better control, especially for photoshop work and the like. Similarly, I refuse to use wireless mice, why would I want to be buying/charging batteries all the time? Mice have tails.

Youre kidding right? My accuracy in FPS got a lot higher with an optical mouse.

About batteries... you can place the mouse in the charger at night...

Nope, no kidding, try fine photoshop work with a ball mouse vs an optical mouse. The difference is huge, the ball mouse offers far superior control. (mind you I made this comparison when optical mice were new - perhaps they have improved or deluxe high resolution models are available now? - but I consistently find ball mice superior still...). Chargers for cordless mice are a recent development. I'm a fan of the "if it ain't broke - don't fix it" tech philosophy - corded ball mice are a perfect technology that simply cannot be improved upon in my opinion... (logitech ball mice that is...)

Then there is my girlfriend who for web/graphic design swears by WACOM tablets.

Which the cats love. It's a warmer spot to lay when not being used, and it's at perfect pillow/cuddle level.
