Cell phones
« on: July 18, 2005, 08:16:25 pm »
Today I ended my 3.5 year relationship with Sprint PCS.  here's a note I sent to Stephen about it, hopefully I censored it enough:

Yeah, my phone is disconnected, for a few weeks now.  I thought about sharing  with everyone who might call, but have been having a hell of a time with sprint lately and am not sure I want to keep it anymore.  When I was 5 days behind on my bill and they disconnected it I decided to let it sit, and see who noticed, and how long it would take for someone to notice it was down.  You are the third person in three weeks, which doesn't make a good case for getting the phone back on.
Sorry about the inconvenience, but I figured this was a good way to guage how much I really need the phone.
Like I said, I've been having a hell of a time with sprint.  I got behind on payments a couple months ago as well, and talked to them about it, telling them when I could pay.  They said no problem, they'd keep my phone on for a predetermined time so I could pay them.  The next day they disconnected it, and the guys I talked to from then on were absolute dicks to me, he scolded me a couple times, when I asked him why I had been promised it would be left on , and then disconnected anyways.  he wouldn't give me a straight answer, only the same ol same ol about my past due balance and this being my fault.  When asked him about the past due balance, and it differed from previous amounts (which all disagreed with each other as well) he insisted that his totals were the current totals and that was the amount.  So I told him that the others I ahd talked to had said the same thing as well, so I would like something more concrete on what I needed to pay them, which got me another snotty scolding.
Finally, pissed off, and ready for him to just terminate the account, I asked about the shutting down the phone thing when they said they wouldn't again, and he just said "you have a past due balance, promisary note or not."  So I asked him "so, I'd like to know, are you saying that the previous man I talked to was a liar, or simply incompetant," which just pissed him off even more.
On to this incident...
I was about 4 days overdue, which is fairly typical for me, (I'll get to that in a minute), when I got a text saying I had to call sprint at a 1800 number immediately.  So I did, and got an automated message saying that I had a past due amount.  I typed to speak to a person, and got put on hold.  SO I waited a couple minutes then said f*** it, if they want to talk, they can call me; they're just gonna shut the f***** off anyways.  Then they did.  Only could have really used the damn thing twice since then, and I got by jsut fine without it.
Now, about the past due thing: my bill is always due at the middle of the month, which is difficult for me, since I only get cash at the end of the month, and since I have so little to work with, well, it goes fast and it goes where it is immediately needed, so what's ended up happeneing is that I put the cell phone bill currently due to the end of the month in favor of other things, like, oh say, keeping gas in my car.  I asked them to move the payment to the end of the month on a couple occassions, but they refused unless I signed up for a two year contract and a new plan.  I asked about a new phone, and was told I'd have to buy it myself, and to use it, sign up for two more years.  My reception sucks a$$, when I do get a call at home I have to go bolting out the door so I can talk to the caller, but that's not usually an issue, since the phone rarely rings at home due to the poor reception ( tested this on a couple of occassions- the phone showed reception, but when I called there was no ring).  Missed calls like this I am not notified of, so if they you call me and I don't pick up, there's a 75% chance I won't ever know you called.
I could tell you other stories, but don't want to get into it right now.  I've been with sprint since spring '02, and am sick of their service.  Hell, I can't even use speed dial to call my voicemail because of a programming error.  Went to the sprint store and was told "we'll need a week to look at it."  This they say as three employees sit, bullsh****** over a subway, and wouldn't even make eye contact when I walked in the door.
Then of course, there is when I first signed up for service: the guy on the phone, that I had paid for completely with my own money, outright refused to sign me up for the plan I wanted because it didn't have enough minutes  (according to his judgement).  But that's another story.
In any event, I don't think the phone is coming back on, But I'll let you know if it does.  I may not be the perfect customer,b ut they always get their money from me, including any late fees they see fit to give me.  I'm jsut sick of the drama with them.
Just FYI: my "current" sprint cell phone plan:
300 anytime minutes, 1000 night time minutes
$35 per month
.
.
.
.
$48 after fees: for a measely g****** 300 minutes...

So shortly after this message I called sprint, was only able to get automated messages, and when I did find an option to talk to a rep, I was disconnected twice while on hold.  When i finally got hold f someone, after a decent hold, the first thing she said was "You have a balance of $39.77, when can you pay it off?"  So I just said screw it, I'm done.  Told them they'd get their moeny when I had it, and to shut down my account permanently.

***the point***
I'm not happy about it, but now I am in the market for a new phone, and was thinking pay as you go, or something with no contracts.  Is there anyone out there other than virgin mobile?  How is their service?  Is it worth it, ro shoudl I simply go back to no cell phone at all again for a permanent basis?

I am wary to sign up for a cotract with anyone else, since it has been an unpleasant arrangement each time I  was in one.

Cingular has a pay as you go plan, that is actually a regular plan, but no contracts, Clark.  If you want more info, PM me and I'll give you all the info.  (Yes, I work for them, so I am very familiar with the options.)  Another thing is, where do you live?  That impacts cell service.

Clark,

Not to sound like I'm defending any cell phone provider, but I could not help wondering how you would feel and react if your employer told you  each and every payday that you were gonna have wait another 4 to 10 days for your pay?

Very good point Toasty.  One thing I do like about Cingular is they ask you when you want to pay your bill.  We have multiple bill cycles, and, since Clark stated he gets paid at the end of the month, he could set it up for the first part, or the last part.  Part of what we have to do is adjust to the customer.  The date shouldn't be fixed.

You know, I was pretty happy with Cingular myself. the only problem I have, is that I'm on a Land line, as there is no way, I can get a good cell phone signal out here in the boondocks.

Still, I'd have to give cingular two thumbs up.

Since we bought out at&t wireless, I've seen people getting sigs in some strange locations.  Of course, OKC is one of the areas that we had to sell some stuff off in to make the FCC happy.

Actually, I'm just outside of Wellstone. Now , my sis in law can get a signal , if she holds her mouth right outside, Kinda like how I can catch a good sized bass, But You guys will get out here. Of that I'm sure. Heh, the funny thing is, Out here , us Fallus Firefighters, Get a free cell phone. along with our normal radio. The thing is, It won't work unless we are in city limits, be It wellston or OKC.

It just takes time though. I'm sure we will have a good signal before long.

Here's an interesting little fact for you then.  Did you know you can contact Cingular and sell them a little piece of land and they'll put a tower on it so they can have service in areas they don't have?  Obviously, it isn't an overnight process, but it gives you some coinage if you have a good lay of land, (think hill), and gives you home coverage.  Yes, I am a thinking bastich.

;D   I know a woman in a nearby town that rents a site to a cell company.  She gets $800 a month rent, and merely provides unlimited access to their crews.

Give me a day or two to get the info together for you.  I don't deal with the towers, I simply fix problems with porting numbers.  But I will find out all I can and give you the numbers to contact.

How good is cingular up here in MN?  I'm not too far from minneapolis  (about 35 miles) so it's suburbia land.  Truthfully, I don't know much of the other carriers.

I can find that out tomorrow by looking up the information on the map service I have.  It shows me where all our towers and such are.  Let me check.  If the coverage sucks, I'll let you know to go to a different carrier.

Which suburb?

I'm over in Maplewood (Due N of downtown St.Paul).  Had cingular...  was atrocious.  (No offence AS).  I think we must have been in a dead zone that didnt show up on coverage maps..  constant dropped calls at home, completly missed calls etc.  It was so bad my GF and i were seriously considering getting a landline again because we realistically could not make/recieve calls from home with any regularity.  Cingular CSR's checked towers etc, and said we had great coverage.

Did phone swaps to see if the issue repeated itself.  4 phones, same problems.

When i was in Downtown Mpls, or out in the northwest metro, service was fine.

Now i'm on sprint.  Have had a total of one dropped call since switching over, and a couple signal fades.  Rates are better too.
For the same amount we had at Cingular, we've got 2x the minutes, no roaming fees, and nights/weekends at 7pm not 9.

(post more later if needed0

Mn is a bad area in certain parts, especially up around the UP.  Just a fact of the business in that area.  Verizon would be good for a second stop, but I'd recommend going to different carriers and trying their service.  You have anywhere from 15 days to 30, depending on carrier, to decide which has the best coverage.   I'd check that out as well.  Clark, PM me your Zip Code again.  I accidentally deleted it.  Sorry.
