SFB Players/Fan's
« on: July 18, 2005, 02:50:41 am »
I was wondering who here is a or has been a Star Fleet Battles player, or fan?   Basically this would also translate into a TOS fan by default as well...Just Curious...

I like SFB, from what ive seen of it. I like TOS ships, but not the sets/effects/costuming. More, I like the recent Neo-TOS stuff, like how Lord Schtupp has done things with his ships.

But, honestly, as you can tell, im much more of a TMP guy. Connie2's and Excel's and Miranda's are my thing.

I've played it and while I don't play it as often now I still try to keep up with the captain's logs and modules.
I enjoy the ADB Starfleet Universe.  ;D

Super heavy player WAY back in the day - Played in many Wargaming convention tournements, including a few out of state like Gencon in WI, Hexcon AZ, OrcCon etc etc. I never won a tourny though, but my bud Vinnie did: He has a true photographic memory, a big plus in SFB with its myriad rules upon rules on hundreds of pages.

My dad has a copy that says Copyright 1979 by Task Force Games.  I found it and learned how to play it several years ago, but I have a really hard time finding anyone willing to play with me.  The manual calls this one the Designer's Edition.  Here's the front and back of the box.

For those of you looking for a game...and can't find anyone local...you could look this site up...

http://www.sfbonline.com/

Also MT...the current editon being used now is called the "Captains Edition" or also know as the "Doomsday Edition"...It did make a few changes and addition to the rules you currently seem to have...

I've looked into the current version of the game, but it's a little too expensive for me right now.  I just thought that you all would enjoy seeing an old version of the game, and I was wondering how common or rare this edition is.

Actually it is more common than you think...anyone who has played SFB, probably has, or has seen a copy of the commmanders edition rules, or stuff even older...Ebay always has some available for purchase...

been SFB since 1984, and we have a group of 6 people who get together almost religously every week or so for almost 12 years now(drives the wives crazy but our kids love it). we love doing crossover stuff with TOS, BsG, B5 etc SSD's.

ADB designed SFB...They needed a publisher...at one point that was TFG...in 1999 I believe they got out from TFG...and now ADB is their own company and publisher...currently they have a deal with Steve Jackson Games, to publish Role-playing rules under their GURPS system, called Prime Directive...so it's basically a SFB Role-Playing game...

At one time we played a little ...  Most we played with were cool !  AS the game rules became more complex and a handfull  of rules lawyers took over ....  After that we pretty much quit.

Always thought it was interesting !

Even with just the Designer's Edition the rules were too complex for most of my friends to even bother with it.  The fact that I was the only real Trekkie in the bunch didn't help much either.  Several of them were casual fans, but their familiarity with anything other than TNG or the movies was severely lacking.

Well if anyone is interested I could make a copy of the Cadet Training rules available...it's like a free sample of crack from ADB...
