help with adding models in EAW.........please!!!
« on: July 15, 2005, 07:27:43 pm »
to start off with i am none to bright, and that will be my oft repeated excuse. Without going into a long sob story, I like TOS and only TOS, and would like to swap out the TMP models with some of the great TOS models i have downloaded from Fleetdock 13 and Battleclinic.com. the only problem being i don't know how! >:( so please don't laugh or mock me overly but i really need Dick and Jane/hold my hand/step-by-step/look over my shoulder instructions. i did try to do this w/SFC1 and had a notable lack of success and i really don't want to get frustrated w/my new toy. i did try Chris Jones mod, but it just is not what i want(in terms of models). any and all help is VERY appreciated. thanks in advance.

p.s. patience may be required.

Towards the back of the specs there ought to be this: assets/models/Model Folder/Model Name.mod: or something similar.  Change the Model Folder and Model Name to their respective names, for example, (Let's say the model is called Constitution) you would change it to assets/models/Constitution/Constitution.mod.  If the MOD file's name is different change it accordingly.

I hope this helps, I'm coming out with a guide soon (Soon being two months) which will teach almost everything someone can do to all volumes of the game.

if your just gonna add new models replacing the old ones you dont need to change the sl. For instance if you replacing the fed ca with one from another source.make a back up of the original folder.delete everything in the fed ca folder.put the new model in  that folder.THIS is the important part. make sure to name the . mod and brk .mod exactly as the old one was named fca.mod and fca_brk.mod for instance. you dont need to rename  any of the bmp in there. hope this helps.

Shipedit helps as well..

available here..

http://www.universeatwar.org/downloads/ShipeditEAW.zip

You can swap models and leave the specs alone..
..Because the game does not have to, and will not, remain the same..

Okay next question. lets say for example i want to add a model named fcao to replace the Fed CA and CA+ but have the model fca continue to represent the the other fca class types? ??? Oh yeah obviously your suggestions worked great! thanks.

his im not as sure about but you do have to use ship edit for this. You have to make a new class of ship in your shiplist adding all the specs like phasres power ans all of thae stuff  Then you have to make a folder in your model folder (named  the ship class you just created) Then you have to put the model you want to use in that folder. This is just a general understanding. I havent actually added a whole new ship the way your asking.
There are a few here that know how to do that tho. Like Chris jones. He is one of the resident modders here.
I hope that this helps even a little.

P.S. rember to make a back up copy of your shiplist BEFORE you do any thing to it.

thanks for the reply, but i'm not sure we are on the page, so i'll try to clarify what i would like to attempt to do.

I download a model called fcao and place it in my models folder. Now i want to this model for the ship classes F-CA and F-CA+ as designated in the shipslist, and only these two classes. I would like the standard fca model to continue as before with all the other ship classes that use it on the shiplist(F-CAR, F-CAI, F-CAD etc.) Is this feasible or am i just missing the jist of your msg?

yes you can do it. you have to make a new entry on your ship list for it tho. That is were ship edit comes in.
Like i said im on shakey ground here. Never having done this  my self but knowing the theory behind it. You will have to make a new model folder  for  it also. There are many people here who have done it. Firesoul,Chris Jones,Dizzy,Die Hard,Skull and bones. to name a few. You actualy might want to take this question to the moding section of this forum or maybe even the modeling section. Im sure that some one who knows more than me will come along and answer your  question.

I used Shipedit to find out what all the parts of the specs do..... never figured out how to make specs with it.....
