When do we get to see the AOTKII map?
« on: July 13, 2005, 03:34:35 am »
Nearly had a mental breakdown when I saw the BETA server map.  After seeing that one I need to see what is actually to be used for the live server so I don't get tempted to buy a sniper rifile and start hunting admins prematurely :P

Whats wrong with it? Its fairly typical for a run and grab the middle type server.

What I have issue with is the middle DV's all at 50. That's totally ridiculous. Needs to be about 15 or so.

I havent checked, but has anyone bothered looking at what kind of terrain the middle has to offer?

3 things

#1 Kzin are cut off from allies by a swath of 50 DV hexes, but right beside the Hydran/Fed/Gorn.  The Lyrans/ISC are grouped with the coalition races, while the Gorn/Romulans have a nice buffer between their empires.

#2 As you mentioned, Dizzy, tons of 50 DV hexes to get anywhere.  5-15 would be more appropriate.  Otherwise it would be a bunch of silly trench warfare along a few hex paths with the rest of the map irrelevant.  Not my cup of tea.

#3 Too many asteroid hexes, it would be boring as hell to spend 90% of the server fighting in only asteroid missions.  I know there is a conceptual need for lots of asteroids in the center, but no need at all for every frickin hex there to be an asteroid one.  Should be some assorted other hex types (open, blackhole, neb) thrown in for at least a little variety other than that found assaulting the planetoids.  3 hours of all asteroid missions would be pretty boring 3 weeks of it insane.  The main action will be in the center no doubt, so we need alot more variety here.  If I wanted to spend so much time in asteroids I'd have joined EVE by now  ;)

I hope these are all BETA aspects that wont be present on the live server.

1) Tis true- shouldn't all the races have equal access to their allies without the need (or with the need) to
run missions? All sides have a drone chucking race so I asume it wasn't for balance.

2) 50DV hexes are bad- unless they're no mandatories (which I didn't check)

3)I assume with the plethora of rocks in the disputed territories that J'inn is actually not planning on playing much?  :P

Sometimes in neutral space you don't get a mandatory sometimes you do.  Irregardless having to build LOS through 50 DV hexes with current player numbers is not conductive to a high entertainment value IMHO.

50 DV hexes????    I didn't put in any 50 DV hexes???

Hmmmm.

I better have a look at that there map.

As for the asteroid field in the middle.   That is from AOTK I.   It's supposed to be a big asteroid field.

As for the neutral zone issue.  That's from the story line and it's only two little hexes wide . . .  sheesh.   Although I read there are 50 DV hexes...    I thought they were 10 DV . . . .

You can still have a "big asteroid field" without having every frickin hex an asteroid one.  Lets see some variety in the terrain in an area where 90% of the action will take place.  At minimun 1/3rd of the hexes in the center zone should have a different feature or the feature of open space.  Otherwise its going to be boring as all hell with every mission in an asteroid field.

Two hexes noone else will have to contend with even if it is reduced to 10 DV.  Over such a wide stretch that amounts to "wasted missions" which have to be run just to reach even par with the other factions.  From what storyline?  I haven't seen any storyline, and in the origional AOTK the Lyrans, ISC, and Kzinti were linked up.  If anyone should be sitting on the wrong side of the neutral zone it would be the Gorns as they were allied with the Klingons and Romulans last time.   ;)

I still contend that with the action so heavily geared to the center of the map that some non asteroid hexes would do much for variety, strategy, and fun.  I think about 1/3rd would be enough to do this.  Might keep players from getting worn down so fast, a good thing with current player numbers IMHO.

Hey, I'm all for having them all be rock hexes. I will pwn j00 @11 there. I have NEVER lost a match in a rock field. In fact, it is where I do my best. In this one particular mission, my poor outnumbered RHK 1st humiliated Jeff's NCL, then went on to slam DH's CB into a rock and then took on Wanderer's CVS and slammed him into one as well. My RHK pwnd 3 of some of the best fed captains in a single mission. My other exploits in rock fiellds are no less spectacular. Kroma's BCH couldnt help prevent my RHK from slamming FT's DNH into one either. And there are many, many more.

So by all means, the more rock hexes the better. But I'm probably the only one who will say this. Chuut may be right, the majority may find so many missions all in rock fields rather repetitive. A few of these patrols are also formulaic when in rocks. That may be a problem if they are all rock fields.

Ummm ....Dizzy just think back to the first AOTK where you lost 3 ships in one rock hex to my Z-CVS or Fluf's Z-CVA in rapid sucession then you decided (and I quote you) "I'm tired of getting killed by Mirak, I'm going to go fight the Gorn".

But don't sweat it Dizzy, you will be the Mirak doing the Killing this time round  We will ROCK!!!!!! and their heads will ROLL!!!!!!    ;D
