My dad has a dell inspiron 2650 with 128mb ram. There is another slot for ram underneath, so I went out and bought a stick of PC2100 sodimm (200pin) ram, 512 type.

When I put the ram in, the computer turns on, and nothing (I mean nothing) happens. Just a black screen. Not even a hint of anything working, except the cd-drive spinning up.

When I remove the ram, it works as normal. What gives?

Speed? Parity? Do a google search on his system for Belarc, and post the memory he has native. It may be the wrong type of memory.

What I suspect is that the laptop can't have more than 512MB of ram. I'm not sure if type/brand of ram makes a difference. Dell sells 256MB sticks, but not anything higher. Making the iuggestion that if you want to achieve 512MB your going to have to replace the other stick. I went to Crucial's website and used there ram configurator and there site said that the 2650 series of laptops can only have up to 512MB.

It is a Dell, go back and exchange that stick for a 256MB stick of 2100DDR.

thanks much for the info. I bought the ram from a 'mom&pop' store across from Best Buy so it'll be no trouble to exchange for a 256. I can't take out the other one, the 128, as it would void the warrenty.

You were correct. The laptop itself cannot support more than 512mb of RAM. I exchanged it for a 256 stick today (384 total) and it worked like a charm. Dad's happy his laptop is working, I'm happy I made $10 on the endeavor.

It was free, my dad's school bought it for him. (He's an auto-body repair teacher, or was, he got promoted recently). He used it to basically show diagrams and write estimates, instead of carrying around huge books.

MY laptop on the other hand comes from ibuypower.com

I can't really recommmend them, as they didn't give me what I asked for (there's no extra ram slot, and the dvd writer/reader doesn't always work correctly) but it is a pretty badass little machine.

normally the removal of the original 128 MB ram to replace it with a 256MB is not considered as voiding the warrenty it is an upgrade so it is ok to do so even for leased systems.

Its not that I wouldn't, I couldn't. It's inaccessable, without removing the entire chassis covering. (not something I wanted to screw around with). There is just a little plate covering the extra ram slot where i put the new one in, nice and simple.

Yeah... I don't own one (yet) and hesitate to spend bucks on one. I prefer at this time to throw any computer money into desktop home builts.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! I too OWN 2 Dell systs one is my server and the other my LAPTOP. (Inspiron 8000).

That laptop has two memory slots. and not all Dells have biult in memory. I know, I used to support Dell.

and to top that off, I am also a pc technician.

The MBs are proprietary. Everything else was made by respective companies. Now I could be wrong that some syst have built in memory but i dont think so. I can check it though.

If Dells website wasn't a pos I could give you page and verse. If you want to remove that stick it must be done by an authorized service center or the warranty would be voided.

The motherboard also was made by another company for Dell, just like the opther parts were made for Dell,
