Bearslayer got me thinking: RPG vs thingie.
« on: July 05, 2005, 05:05:06 pm »
I was thinking about the Space type RPG's we have out there since he started his Lst words thread.

Who do you guys think would win between Warhammer40K (Imperial)  vs. Starwars (Empire)  vs. Startrek (and and all) ?

Personaly, I strongly believe that W40K would wipe the floor both in Troops and capital battles, but I may be abit prejudiced. It hurts to admit that about Trek also.

What, no Fleet Marines from Starship Troopers?  A Starship Trooper from the book would kick the snot out of all of them.

SFB-stat Trek where a Photon has a range on 300,000 KM and a larger yeild than a Nuke?

This being the Case, Trek hands down.   Imperial ships could not compete in weapons ranges and the shis are MUCH faster.   Implulse power approaches the speed of light, Star Wars combat was smaller and slower.

Just imagine what F14s/ZYCs would do to Tie Fighters . . . .

Actuallt kinda depends
Using three VERY different tech levels but..
assuming "space" battles
The big "losers" so to speak (imho) would be 40ks Navy.
The ships are huge, sure, but really not all that well armed for their size.
(at least vis a vis the other two)
Star Wars/Star trek is slightly more difficult, I'd actually argue that the lasers etc in Star Wars are
considerably more powerful than lasers in ST, Not sure if they'd have phaser level power or not, but they'd be close.
As for F14's/ZYcs -dunno, if one thing is completely screwed up in SFB it's their implemention of fighters.
While I understand the gaming reason behind it , SFB has neither the number of fighters or the individual capabilities at a level that actually makes sense.

As for ANY battle that takes place involving troops, I'd have to go with
1) Space Marines
2) StormTrooper Legions
3) Imperial Guard
995) Whatver the heck Star Trek uses for security detail.

Well, with the inclusion of the Terran Confederation Stellar Navy and the Mobile Infantry to the whole mix, I'll have to give the whole shebang to the Confederation.

I mean, Heinlin directly discribes the TCSN as having 'nova bombs' which could 'crack a planet'. He says that they COULD do that to the Bug's home planet, but they wouldn't dare because they had some MI prisoners. Their ships are more like SW ships than ST in howfast they are... but if a single ship- even a specialized one- can bust up a planet, that makes them more powerful than Han's discription of the whole Imperial Navy' (reguarding the statement that the whole star fleet couldn't have blown up Alderaan). A ship-to-ship duel with a ST ship would likely wind up being a 'puncher vs. boxer' type match... the ST ship might get a kill if it can dance around with it's superior speed, but if it ever get's connected with solidly, the fight's over.

An infantry battle is no match- TCFM's would clean house agianst all.

Actually the 40K boys can nuke planets as well.
One on One I'd give the edge to a MI, once you start getting into actually units I'd have to go with 40K marines.

I'd go with that, if all the MI could do was 'nuke.'

What they were supposed to be able to do was obliterate the planet.

If one 40K ship can just zap and the planet goes 'LOOOOM' and disappears from space and time, then they would have an advantage... simply because they have more ships and zillions and scads and bunches of troopers. We're talking like sand on the beaches.

I think Rico said that the MI was only a few Divisions... so that would definately give the 'swarm attack' edge to 40K.

The "usual" technique for nuking a planet in 40K (if you unfamiliar with it) is actually
a virus bomb.
Basically anything and everything organic on a planet rots/combusts within a few secons.
Huge flash fire and nothing is living.
All (or some) of the equipment seems to survive though.
And rogue inquisitors have managed to destroy moons (small moons I admit, but still...)
I assume once ya can do a moon it's only a matter of scale  ;D

Uhm... quick question that MIGHT help your game:

If that inquisitor can DESTROY the the small moon/large asteroid, well... why not redirect it into a largish contenent on the planet of the people you are at war with?

It would make an "earth-shattering KABOOM!!!"

Isn't that lovely? Hmmmm? ;)

ONly if the boys hold Will Wheaton down on the railroad tracks and let the train run over him.
