My next "PC"?
« on: July 04, 2005, 11:16:54 am »
Having lost my desktop PCs and servers, realising it is 2005 and that I am a nomad at heart, I am seriously considering one of these as my next "PC": iPAQ vs Treo

I am leaning towards the iPAQ because it includes a terminal services client...

I have never owned a pocket PC and don't know much about them, but I will never by another HP product again (I bought an HP CD writer almost four years ago when I built my computer.  It took me a while to actually get it to work right and NOT ruin the CD at the end of the burn, without any help from their nonexistant tech support.) and every time one of my friends has yet another problem with their HP piece of crap (it seems like in the past three years the only ones that have computer problems are the ones with HPs), I just want to pull my hair out and tell them that all it's good for is throwing off of the roof of the dorm and seeing how many pieces it breaks into.

In short, because of my own personal experiences with HP, I would not recommend the iPAQ.

The HP has some serious firmware issues from what I have heard. I would go with this instead of the HP until they get their issues solved.

Thanks for the tip!

Found this while looking at these: http://www.greenlightwireless.net/ They compress and format webpages for handhelds. e.g.: http://www.skweezer.net/s.aspx/2/www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php

I understand http://www.codeproject.com runs on iPac(s)

In fact, here is the article about it: http://www.codeproject.com/scrapbook/hosting.asp

Interesting concept, but check the date posted!  ;)  ;D  (The first half of the article had me wondering... then the punchline confirmed.) The two handheld clusters linked look legit:

I did find http://www.handhelds.org/ in there though...

I was going back and forth on the cell phone/pda combo and pure pda using a cell phone to link with the net. I think I'm about decided on doing the pure pda and linking up with a cell phone for internet. You just seem to get a more powerful pda going that route. As I've noticed that most of the pda cell phone combos aren't compatible with a compact flash cards which limits there memory size.

Bonk, I am nowhere near the computer man you are, but why not a notebook or laptop?

If I had to do what you did, I'd personally get a HP 48G+ with all the add on RAM cards.  In those days, HP made incredibly good stuff.

(By the way the 48G+ is a programmable scientific calculator with decent (128 Kb) RAM, clock, alarms, IR communications, and LOTS of user[really, fans] made software to do whatever, from playing chess to three level deep and searchable periodic tables to many engineering apps...

... even a Star Trek game!  Of course this would mean turning my back on the Wintel, Apple, etc. world of computing... )

EDIT:  I should add, I'm kidding.

ROFL, yes  I am familiar with HP's arcane calculator technologies.   ;D

Hey, I can always load up the emulator on an iPAQ. ;)

I was suprised to see the iPAQa are using TI processors,  remided me of playing games on the old TI99

For a proven HP handheld I could always go with one of these:  HP75:D

I was trying to remember this forum a couple of days ago, but Howardforums.com is a good resource for anything mobile including palm or pocket pc devices.

Are you /REALLY/ considering one of those?  Why don't you just cut out the pretenses and get one of these:

Yeah!

HP 49G+, 48GII+, and 33S: RPN is alive and kicking!

Sob, sniff,  :'(  : I couldn't afford the 41C series calcs at the time.  I got instead the 34C, and loved it, but wonder what it would have been like to have a 41 CX or 42S!

I do have a working 41 CX. However so that I can save it for when I am on the road, I use an emulator that really does a good job and can load all of the ROM chips at once on my PC.

If you're interested in iPAQ's then check out IpaqHQ.

I have an iPAQ 2215, recently replaced by a  Dell Axim X50V (a very good alternative to the iPAQ hx4700-series, imho).
