Still Having Firewall Problems !!!
« on: June 28, 2005, 11:32:48 pm »
All my patches and updates have been checked and double checked. I still keep hitting the old firewall. Yes, I have even unistalled  Zone Lab firewall and tried it, no success.  I'm pretty sure it has to do with switching to Verizion DSL from dialup.  I had no problems with dialup even with Zone Lab.  If anyone is using DSL and having success I would appriceate any advice you could give me.  Thanks

I  have no clue on how to change port settings.

I can log on Gamespy  but when I try to set up a game room I get a message saying I have an internal and an external IP address which might interfer with play.  Would that be the same as port connections?

Yeah I think so...

somewhere on this site...there is a  thread with all the proper port numbers needed to be opened for SFC to work online....

maybe one of the guys with DSL could set ya straight...(I'm still on dial up)

Here is what I do with my ports on my router, and I run DMZ while gamimg (only).  Cleaven and Megafortress posted some extensive guidance, but you may have to Search.

Did Verizon provide you with a pppoe client (connection manager) or are you using XP's native pppoe connection manager?

Can you connect to the Verizon service from a non-windows OS?

With a DSL connection you have 2 IP addys, an internal and an external....it's exactly the same as a cable connection when you are running through a router. I use DSl and have no problems, except I only use the Windows firewall. Try dropping your firewall, then connect to D2. If you can connect at that point, then you know it's a firewall problem. Zone Alarm has problems, and I don't particularly recommend it, mostly issues with secure websites and online gaming. If you can connect without the firewall running, then try setting exceptions for the ports listed above...if that doesnt work, get another firewall.

I have yet to have an issue using ZoneAlarm with OP. I just make sure that StarFleetOP.exe is already on the safelist to allow in and out. Then the first time I try to connect, all I have to do is put dplayhelper on the safelist, too and I'm good to go. No problems. If you're having problems using ZA with OP, I suggest you check the nut at the keyboard.

Can you host more than three players stably (where you draft)? People blame drafting stability on the game, I blame it on software firewalls and internet accelerators. Can you be pinged from the internet? (if not, you will have problems). I reccomend against using zonealarm out of consideration for others when drafting on the D2. (player drops are the bain of the D2, and a software firewall can only add to your latency for a number of reasons.)

dont forget the directX version conflicts...

everyone should be on 9.0c

8.0 and 9 dont play well together...and can mimic drops and draft problems...

Verizon provided me with there software plus MSN Premium. I've been using MSN .  Although I can connect with either IE or MSN Explorer.

Raztax,
