My dad, among other computers, has a Compaq laptop, Presario 2100 series, (2140US)Windows XP
For christmas my borther gave him a D-link airplus G card (DWL-G630) so my dad could access his wireless network. The wireless network works fine, I am certain that it is not the problem. Other computers access the network with no problems.
When I insert the card into the compaq I get a monotone *ding**ding**ding*, and the computer does not seem to recognize the card at all after that. Other devices give the normal tone when I insert it, but I have to admit that none of these devices are PC cards or PCMCIA cards that go into the slot I'm talking about.
I've tried resetting the computer, and reinstalling the driver software, which is all I can think of in this case. Any help would be appreciated, if anyone knows how to fix this problem.

Do you have another laptop to try the card it? Could be faulty.

Return the card, it could be bad.

if the card works in other computers install the drivers for the card first then insert the card

Check the bios settings for the pcmcia slot?

Which 2100 is it? --> Presario 2100 support ... follow through the manuals link for your model.

Does it already have integrated 802.11 WLAN (I understand many of the 2100s do) If so, it may need to be disabled if you are adding a pcmcia card for the same job?

Latest drivers. Hardware sees and can talk to the card, as indicated by the '*ding**ding**ding*', but if Windows doesn't see it then get the latest drivers.
