Giving something back
« on: June 24, 2005, 02:42:20 pm »
That is if anyone would want it. I figured it was time to give something back to the community since I can’t really model ships of my own.  I can’t really kitbash or anything but I did modify the textures on this CG Sovereign.  It was blue so I made it tan to look more Nemesis like.  It is taking a long time for his newest more Canon version of it so I thought this might be a nice ship to use while waiting.  I also made some damage textures for it, and although they look really sweet, they need to be illuminated.  As you can see from the pic they look ok on the ship but the entire area around it is lit up and only the actual damage should be.  So would anyone like it and send it over to the Battle Clinic?

I'm glad ya guys like it.  I'm still having problems with the illumination of the Damage textures.  I'm not getting them to work in Paint anyways.  I could try to send it to ya guys individually but it would probably be faster if it was on the Battle Clinic.

You're using Paint?! :smackhead:
If you have access to a program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, use them.  If not, download GIMP at http://www.gimp.org/.  It's an open source alternative to Photoshop which works pretty well, and some people prefer it over Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
Whatever you do, stop using paint and start using a REAL image editing program.

I still think I did a pretty good job considering I don’t have a cool program like that.  But still, it would be a lot better with one.  I think I will download it and try to fix those damage textures.

Photo shop is pretty cool !

I may have an opportunity to finally sell my bass boat.  If that happens ...  WOO HOO ..  the first thing I do is up-grade my 5.5 t othe latest version of that program.

Trust me ..  once you get one of the better programs ...  it opens up another whole world in photo finishing ..  and /or  graphics ..

Heck  ..  I'm just a babe compared to most of these guys here..  ( No training at all ..  just what I've managed to figure out on my own with limited time and resources) ...  I can only imagine what someone with better computer skills and training can do with this stuff !

GO FOR IT BUBBA !

if your gonna upgrade, i suggest you go with CS, but not CS2, it runs smoother IMHO.

I think you did a pretty DAMN good job considering you don't have a cool program like that, but if you can do that with Paint, just think what you could do with Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or GIMP.  With Paint, you're moving with thrusters only, but with one of these other programs, you're flying a warp speed!

I would recommend trying out GIMP simply because it's free.  I've used it some and, aside from a few little annoying quirks, it works pretty well.  Anyone who is familiar with Photoshop should be able to pick it up easily.  Personally, I use Photoshop CS, but I got a great deal on it through my school, and I doubt that I would have paid full price for it if that was the only way I could have it.

Well I downloaded the GIMP program but how do you use it?  I mean I dont even have a program, just 20 megs of files.  There was no installer for the program or anything.

Very very sweet Spartan, if ya could, could ya place the damage textures right at the front of the saucer to give it a more "Nemesis" damaged look ?

I did this to the saucer, but I don't know if that looks more Nemesis like.  It does on the actual texture I remade, but during gameplay that was the only amount of Damage visible.  I did notice though that when I tried to make Damage textures for other ships without them that they won’t show in game.  This Sovereign is the only one that shows them.  On another note though, the CG Sovereign 2.0 will be out fairly soon, maybe July 4th or soon after.  Updates are posted on the BCU Forums.

go here http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
Download and install the GDK first (GIMP won't work without it), then download and install GIMP.  It should work fine then.
