SFC II ...wtf???
« on: June 17, 2005, 10:50:34 am »
OK, I've played this game on and off since it came out. I downloaded the first patch and update, defeated one race, and have been playing the limited battle scenarios since (patrol, convoy escort, deep space encounter and convoy raid....that's it!) under "single player - Campaign" and with a 95%+ mission success rate. This gets old even on "Admiral" level . My goal is, obviously, to wipe out another race and continue on to total conquest of the galaxy! Hell, I've held the Mirak to 4 or 5 sectors for the past year-and-a-half since defeating the Klingons, but the game seems to want to keep any other race from getting destroyed.  The SFC update panel leads me nowhere. Are there any updates anywhere that will allow me to progress in this game? Thanks.

Do you have the latest patch?  I think Taldren might have made it extremely difficult to completely destroy another race in campaign.

You could try my EEK mission pack.   It's great for single-player PvE players. The missions are challenging; so challenging that some Server Admins. are too scared to use the harder missions on their dynaverse multi-player PvP campaigns because they require co-op play.

Here's the webpage on it:

You'll find the necessary MCT files to change the missions you use with the installer.

What race are you flying?  I've done the same thing as Romulan and I conquered the Feds and Hydrans pretty quickly, then the Klingons turned on me and I took them over, and I wiped out the Lyrans really fast too.  Seems the ISC and Gorn didn't want to piss me off too badly after the Klingons fell ;D

Oddly enough, I never ran out of Klingon ships to fight, anywhere on the map...

My experiences with conquering races date back a few patches on EAW, but I once eliminated every race but 2, I think.  The longer a campaign goes, the save file for the campaign containing the records of AI ships and such becomes bogged down with "stuff".  For such purposes, a kind soul has developed a database cleaner for OP.  My recollection is that with every race eliminated, the campaign file has more and more problems generating the universe.  I always reached a point where I would win missions but was unable to reduce the defense value of a space no matter how many missions I won.  When the map reached that level of saturation I always quit because I could at least claim victory over the computer.

What I have done more recently is to reduce a conquered race to a single homeworld and leave them alone.  That way, that race will still show up in random missions, and the map database has fewer conflicts.  You don't get the race conquered screen, but my campaigns no longer bog down and I can play much longer.

I concur with the advice to add the EEK missions to the mix.  Galactic conquest is then no longer your primary concern.  You focus more on running away from missions where you are going to get waxed and hanging in for missions that are winnable if you are willing to sweat the details.

oh yeah, the machine I did that on was only 400MHz and after a while I was really lucky for that campaign to load at all!  After the rank of Rear Admiral it always took like 10 minutes to load.
