3d Studio Max 3

Just wondering if it's any good for modelling. Believe it or not, I think I found a copy for sale. Unopened at that. Don't want to get it if it isn't worth it though.

Actually 3ds max is an excelant modelling tool once you learn to use it affectively
as version 3 is outdated (though still quite useful) and no longer supported by Discreet I wouldn't pay out alot of money for it

That's definitely a good price considering the latest version (3ds max 7) is up in the thousands.  Plus, the SFC .mod import/export plugins will only work with versions 3, 4, and 5, all of which are becoming increasingly more difficult to come by.  I was fortunate enough to stumble across a copy of 3ds max 4 and that's what I use for modeling for SFC.

Yes, Max 3 is an exellent starter program, I have versions 3 thru 7 & they all pretty much work the same as far modelling for SFC
It's been awhile since I've made anything for sfc, but if I remember correctly, the import/export plugins for max 3 are different than those for max 4 & 5.
If you need them, email me & I'll dig them up.

Thank you for the plug-ins. It ships Monday morning. So that gives me a few days to figure out how to make it work on a WinXP machine (there's a page regarding that at discreet. still trying to figure it out). Anyone using 3 on an XP machine?

That'd be me among others... the problem with Max on XP is the Sentinel hardware locks need to be updated for XP.  Then it runs fine.  :)

I got my own copy a few years back at a public auction for dirt cheap, and everyhing I do goes through it.  So I can guarantee that you can use Max 3 for creating ships for SFC 1, 2, and 3.. plus also BC.  I have an Armada plugin as well, but I've not tried it as of yet..
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

Don't bother checking out my website for the most recent updates, because I've
been too lazy to update it!  Check Battleclinic!

I couldn't tell from the article I read which hardware lock I needed. Off the top of my head, I think it said Sentinel Pro hardware lock drivers and gave a link to the company that makes Sentinel. But I didn't see a "Sentinel Pro hardware lock driver" on the list that came up. I'll have to go back to that article and the links and see if it makes any more sense today than it did yesterday.

I'm back with a follow-up question.

The Discreet website says "For 3ds max 2.5 through 3ds max 3.1, you must upgrade the Sentinel SuperPro Hardware Lock drivers from the Download section of the SafeNet web site at http://www.safenet-inc.com/support".

Only when I follow that link, I find a link that says "Sentinel Hardware Key Downloads/Help Tips (Ultrapro, Superpro, Pro)" and links to the Knowledge Database. Searching the knowledge database for Hardware Lock Drivers results in nothing.

The "Sentinel Hardware..." link takes me to a page that has several downloads available. Two of the downloads are for Windows; a Sentinel Protection Installer and a SuperPro driver. So does anyone know which one I need to install? Or where to find this Hardware Lock driver?
