This looks interesting.

I wish you would reconsider the wild geese concept.  You should not be penalized for getting out your troops.

By the same token, players on a side with fewer pilots signed up, or less available nutter time, shouldn't be punished either, I always found a campaign more fun if my side could win by superior piloting and strategy rather than superior numbers.  Actually, I've had a better time when my side lost for those very same reasons as well.  Nothing more frustrating than a numbers imbalance.

I'll be happy to do Geese duty.

You are penalized. The penalty is having a dull server with no opposition.

Wild Geese

- 3-5 volunteers will switch sides every 3 days when needed to balance player numbers.

Who decides "when needed?"

What do you do if a side decides to "rope-a-dope" near a VC counting period to get 3-5 volunteers on their side for the next three days, then come on in force?

If you know you have three Wild Geese on your side, do you trust them with message board access, and tell them everything you know, realizing they may be the opposition tomorrow?

I've come to the conclusion that the Wild Geese concept is a bad idea.  I hope it does not come to pass.  I will be much less interested in a server that employs this concept.

Dizzy, I urge you to get rid of the Wild Geese concept on your server.  If you have it, I would appreciate it if you would be very specific about how you intent to run it.  I also think we should know who is "wild".

Dizzy, I urge you to get rid of the Wild Geese concept on your server.  If you have it, I would appreciate it if you would be very specific about how you intent to run it.  I also think we should know who is "wild".

The idea here is simple. Player imbalance leads to server domination by side A and side B leaves the server which kills it. Servers are few and far between these days and too much effort is wasted on lopsided servers. Wild Geese are the only way to balance player lop-sidedness. Map design and VC conditions havent worked, neither have special rules or player signups or drafts.

Now, I do see the flip side, dont think I do not. Mustering the troops before the server and then killing the enemy's ass completely and decisively early on by sheer numbers demoralizing them and forcing a win by enemy exodus from the server, have been in the past, a tried and true strategy which nets one side a win, but at the cost of PvP and player participation. While extremely satisfying to some, It isnt to me.

So my server will focus on player participation and PvP using the Wild Geese as a tool to keep a player exodus from happening because one side is stacked more than the other.

I'll decide every three days at a set time if the Geese switch and you will know who and when. And It's up to the RM what strategic info they get. If you dont feel you can trust them, then dont. I'll also have to be very specific what criteria I use to determine if they switch. It hasnt worked well in the past when an admin makes a 'judgement' call when it comes to 'steering' the direction of a server for the good of server longevity, so to avoid that backlash... I'm thinking of a set condition which triggers the switch. Perhaps a run-away with total hexes/types taken or a seriously lop-sided PvP score, not just because at 2am side B has 10 more players on. So a set of conditions the players know and can count on and possibly even work into their strategy is what should be used.

I'll have to really be specific, so when it happens, it's taken as business as usual. But looking at the big picture, 3-5 players using specific guidelines as to how and when and who switches... shouldnt be that big a deal, and I think should be a standard server feature from now on...

Hope that helps.

Actually I thought the draft system worked rather well

I don't think every server should be draft oriented as it would restrict player racial choice but every once in a while I think it isn't a bad idea.

Signups on the other hand are a lost cause, as many players for some reason or other never sign up and play like nutters and other sign and dont show at all.  In all my time of playing I've yet to see an accurate sign up for a server.

A natural player for a wild goose role would be someone who didn't think they would have too much time on the first 3 days of the server and would sit out until day 4, that way they likely would not have to switch sides as much (or very likely at all).  I'd be willing to do this.  Another alternate might be to schedule players off instead of having them switch with a dominating side asking 3-5 pilots to take a break instead of switching.  I know I could find other things to do if I were on the side that was ahead, and that wouldn't require any need for plan secrecy.  Call these "Lazy Geese" if you will.

Now that was just painful . . .

The draft on Mirror worked out in the end.   Though it was under-populated, the player balance was wonderful.

I thought the "Big question" involved scheduling, to be more precise Die Hards fantasy weekend with Rosie O'Donnell....... ;D

I could swear I heard him mentioning dating "Rosie" on teamspeak one night.....

P.S.  Likely going to hell for that one, but couldn't resist  ;D
