I found dplay.dll and dplaysvr.exe in the system32 folder and as far as I can tell everything is in order.  Still no dynaverse.

Just curious...

Did you also install and register at Gamespy arcade[b/]?

You need an active account to pass the log in (it's free..or you can upgrade to a subsciption)

I'm claiming this is your problem....but...

I've had problems before with firewall messages that cleared up after doing a gamespy update (Gamespy tweaks their software every once and a a while)...

BTW...I'm on dial up ...and GSA still thought I was behind a firewall...

It's worth a shot...if you can log into GSA...you should also be able to log into the dynaverse...

If Worse comes to worse (meaning you cant get on from within your system)...get a land line.....yes online play is that good...wether on SGA or the D2...and the game DOES work for 56k users...

Also making sure you have directX 9.Oc is important...there are some conflict issues with older directX versions that effect drafting and hosting in game ...

And DONT give up...our success rate with getting people set up is 99.99%...

I installed, updated, and registered with gamespy.  I just tried to play on GSA, but it didn't work.  No games showed up when I selected to play on gamespy.  I'm new to OP online play and the only multiplayer I've done before with any SFC game was with my roommate over LAN.

you said your  using the dorms connection.Do they  have a fire wall? if so you might need to talk to some one about you  getting acess to the d2.

I also use ZoneAlarm without any difficulties, am able to play on GSA and D2.
Did you ever find out about the above?

not yet, but my roommate plays Rome Total War, which also uses gamespy, all the time and he's never had this kind of problem.  I'll try asking, but I'm not very hopefull for a good or accurate answer.

There was a chance that when  you were on GSA, there were no players with a room up.  Please try again in case that was the case.

Hmmm....

Try using your buddies log in nickname , E-mail addy , and password in the "log in" screen...

Like I said...if you can play on GSA...it should also be able to connect to the dyna...I'm almost certain it's a setting or something simple like that...

When I tried it, I opened up GSA, found a room, talked with them for a little while (they recognized my name from some ships they downloaded for SFC3), and then they started a game.  I tried to get in the game too, but the game wouldn't show up in the list of available games.

Actually this sounds a lot like you had the game installed, but dont have the proper patches or game version.  You may want to launch the game from desktop, check on the picture during load time, and on the bottom right, there will be a version number.  It needs to be 2.5.5.2  . if it is different in any way, you  have the wrong version, and this will cause all of the problems I have seen listed so far.  Please report back with the version number when you get a chance.

I've already went through all that.  I have 2.5.5.2, OP Enhancement pack 3.2, Dynaverse Directory Installer, and GW5.

As for a port setting, I have no idea how that works.

Heh..me neither...

Well sorta...as I understand it...

since you are on a network...your PC can communicate through "ports" for input and output...

Your buddies game CAN be using a different set of ports than SFC requires....thus it may work on GSA while SFC does not...

As I understand it...it can either be your own port settings...OR...your networks (some networks only allow outside access to certain port settings)...

If the case is the former....someone needs to walk you through opening the ports you need...

If it's the latter...you'll need to request your own network ADMIN to allow those ports to be initiated.....

DISCLAIMER:....that may not be your problem...but I have seen such cause simular problems in the past...

Sorry there Mr. Tricorder, with the other posts I mixed up the connection types.

Here goes...

You are on a college network, right?  Probably T1 speed...

I'd check with your college's computer administration, and find out if there's a firewall protecting the dorm.  It may be possible that you're all set to play, and are being blocked by the school.  We've had at least 2 or 3 people that had that problem before.

If the school does have a firewall, see if they'll open a few ports for you.  Find one of the numerous "how to connect through a router" threads, and inside it you'll find a list of port numbers.  Don't worry what they mean, just get all those port numbers (or the thread's URL) to them, they should know what to do...

Let us know once you find out about the school's setup...

I just went to the computer help desk, and they were about as helpful as a bunch of Pakleds in Engineering (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, watch the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare").  I did manage to find out that there is a firewall around the school's network (I already assumed as much), but they weren't about to help me get through it.  Does anybody have any new ideas, or am I restricted to just playing single player and multiplayer over LAN with my roommate?

Well that kinda settles that....

Unless they allow the needed ports to be opened...your only other option is a phone line and a local ISP...

Maybe if someone wrote you up a nice complete explaination of which ports and why they are needed to play the game....that the servers are secure...and the game copy protected and such...

The key might just be getting the right info to the right person...

Dial-up.   Not kidding, it will work.  That or bribe the IT guys into puting you in a DMZ with your own Public IP.   That may require hookers and photographs for Blackmail, ask J'inn.

DH is right....well...sorta... ;D

it might require you to get "creative"...asking a shmoe at the desk was probablly worthless...

Find out who the lead admin is...suck up a bit...show em what you need and that your not looking to do silly stuff....maybe they can configure you to a DMZ or set you up on your own IP......

Hell...point them right to here and we'll explain it to them...
