please help me get past my firewall
« on: June 07, 2005, 06:18:40 pm »
I just bought Orion Pirates yesterday, installed the updates and enhancements you have here to play on Dynaverse, and tried to connect, but it says that my firewall is preventing it from connecting.  I told my firewall to allow OP to connect to the internet, but I'm still having the same problem.  I am in a college dorm with a T1 network connection (at least I think it's T1).  Could someone help me?

OS:  Windows XP service pack 2 - fully updated
Firewall:  Windows Firewall (included with service pack 2)
Antivirus:  AVG 7.0 free edition - fully updated

system specs:
Motherboard:  ASUS A7S 333
CPU:  AMD Athalon Thunderbird 1.4 GHz (going to replace it as soon as I can afford a new one)
RAM:  512 MB DDR RAM (not sure what kind, but it's from when DDR RAM was pretty new)
Video Card:  PowerColor ATI Radeon 9200SE
Sound Card:  SoundBlaster Audigy2
Network Card:  D-Link Ethernet Card
Hard Drive 1:  Maxtor 120 GB Hard Drive 7200 RPM (this is where the game is installed)
Hard Drive 2:  Seagate 40 GB Hard Drive 5400 RPM
CD-Writer:  Hewlet Packard 9500i 24x12x48 (piece of crap, but it usually works)
DVD-ROM:  16x52 (not sure what brand)

Got it patched, etc?
Check these threads... ;)
You'll especially need the mini-updater for D2 play.

I'm not going to try and debug your firewall but will direct you to the download page

Link to Download page

Downloads that you want from that page:

The SFC2OP 2500-2552 Patch

The Dynaverse.Net Client D2 Patch Installer which is required because the CD key verifier is not at the old location.  Without it you will get the Firewall error even with no firewall.

Firesoul's OP4 ship list.  You may not know it but you want this.

Do unto others as Frey has done unto you.

I've already got all of that stuff installed.  I found this thread http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163349163.0.html, found the latest versions of everything listed, and installed them.  Here's the order that I did everything.

Installed Orion Pirates
Installed 2552 patch and tested to see if it worked
found the thread about setting up the game for Dynaverse
Installed OP Enhancemant Pack v3.4 (everything listed in the forum to install between the old verson of the OP Enhancement Pack and the Dynaverse.Net Client D2 Patch Installer appears to be included in the current version of the OP Enhancement Pack)
Installed Dynaverse.Net Client D2 Patch Installer
Installed GW5

I tried that just now and it still didn't work.
Ok, here's what I have been doing:
I start the game by clicking on a shortcut configured to open StarFleetOP.exe
I click on Multiplayer
I click on Dynaverse II
The messages appear saying that it is checking to make sure it is patched and everything and welcomes me to Dynaverse
after a short while, a message appears saying that my firewall is preventing me from connecting or that I am not online
the buttons at the bottom of the screen are blacked out and I cannot click on them

I haven't fixed my own problem yet so this might be a case of the blind leading the blind, but are you using Windows XP with service pack 2?  The Windows Firewall in service pack 2 is designed to automatically activate itself if you are using another firewall and it goes down.  You might want to check and see if Windows Firewall didn't automatically activate itself when you turned off Zone Alarm.

I completely uninstalled the game, reinstalled it, and reinstalled all of the extra material on the list for Dynaverse play and it still doesn't work.  Also, for some strange reason, I can't use fighters for single player or multiplayer over LAN.

Make sure the "start in" field of the shortcut is properly filled in...

That's a common cause of the "fighter bug", and may be what's keeping you offline...

The path to your game.  Typically (cut from the field on my shortcut)

"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\"

It needs the quotes...

Sorry about not having that eariler...

Zone Alarm is now sounding to be the likely culprit...

Make sure DPlay.exe and StarfleetOP.exe are both programs with full rights to the internet (every option checked on)...

If that doesn't help, try uninstalling Zone Alarm, rebooting, and then go online...

I navigated to this thread and firefox tried to close every 5 seconds.  Luckily I had 2 tabs open so it asked me if I was sure I wanted to close first, but I just thought y'all would like to know something's fishy in this thread.

It seems fine to me.  I just tested it on my Win2k Pro Firefox (from which I'm posting) and a Linux Firefox both had no shutdowns or warnings of them.

In the Windows System32 folder, it's part of Direct X... (and it's probably dplay.dll or something similar...

Just curious...

Did you also install and register at Gamespy arcade[b/]?

You need an active account to pass the log in (it's free..or you can upgrade to a subsciption)

I'm claiming this is your problem....but...

I've had problems before with firewall messages that cleared up after doing a gamespy update (Gamespy tweaks their software every once and a a while)...

BTW...I'm on dial up ...and GSA still thought I was behind a firewall...

It's worth a shot...if you can log into GSA...you should also be able to log into the dynaverse...

If Worse comes to worse (meaning you cant get on from within your system)...get a land line.....yes online play is that good...wether on SGA or the D2...and the game DOES work for 56k users...

Also making sure you have directX 9.Oc is important...there are some conflict issues with older directX versions that effect drafting and hosting in game ...

And DONT give up...our success rate with getting people set up is 99.99%...

I installed, updated, and registered with gamespy.  I just tried to play on GSA, but it didn't work.  No games showed up when I selected to play on gamespy.  I'm new to OP online play and the only multiplayer I've done before with any SFC game was with my roommate over LAN.

not yet, but my roommate plays Rome Total War, which also uses gamespy, all the time and he's never had this kind of problem.  I'll try asking, but I'm not very hopefull for a good or accurate answer.

There was a chance that when  you were on GSA, there were no players with a room up.  Please try again in case that was the case.

Hmmm....

Try using your buddies log in nickname , E-mail addy , and password in the "log in" screen...

Like I said...if you can play on GSA...it should also be able to connect to the dyna...I'm almost certain it's a setting or something simple like that...

When I tried it, I opened up GSA, found a room, talked with them for a little while (they recognized my name from some ships they downloaded for SFC3), and then they started a game.  I tried to get in the game too, but the game wouldn't show up in the list of available games.

Actually this sounds a lot like you had the game installed, but dont have the proper patches or game version.  You may want to launch the game from desktop, check on the picture during load time, and on the bottom right, there will be a version number.  It needs to be 2.5.5.2  . if it is different in any way, you  have the wrong version, and this will cause all of the problems I have seen listed so far.  Please report back with the version number when you get a chance.

I've already went through all that.  I have 2.5.5.2, OP Enhancement pack 3.2, Dynaverse Directory Installer, and GW5.

As for a port setting, I have no idea how that works.

Heh..me neither...

Well sorta...as I understand it...

since you are on a network...your PC can communicate through "ports" for input and output...

Your buddies game CAN be using a different set of ports than SFC requires....thus it may work on GSA while SFC does not...

As I understand it...it can either be your own port settings...OR...your networks (some networks only allow outside access to certain port settings)...

If the case is the former....someone needs to walk you through opening the ports you need...

If it's the latter...you'll need to request your own network ADMIN to allow those ports to be initiated.....

DISCLAIMER:....that may not be your problem...but I have seen such cause simular problems in the past...

Sorry there Mr. Tricorder, with the other posts I mixed up the connection types.

Here goes...

You are on a college network, right?  Probably T1 speed...

I'd check with your college's computer administration, and find out if there's a firewall protecting the dorm.  It may be possible that you're all set to play, and are being blocked by the school.  We've had at least 2 or 3 people that had that problem before.

If the school does have a firewall, see if they'll open a few ports for you.  Find one of the numerous "how to connect through a router" threads, and inside it you'll find a list of port numbers.  Don't worry what they mean, just get all those port numbers (or the thread's URL) to them, they should know what to do...

Let us know once you find out about the school's setup...

I just went to the computer help desk, and they were about as helpful as a bunch of Pakleds in Engineering (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, watch the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare").  I did manage to find out that there is a firewall around the school's network (I already assumed as much), but they weren't about to help me get through it.  Does anybody have any new ideas, or am I restricted to just playing single player and multiplayer over LAN with my roommate?

Well that kinda settles that....

Unless they allow the needed ports to be opened...your only other option is a phone line and a local ISP...

Maybe if someone wrote you up a nice complete explaination of which ports and why they are needed to play the game....that the servers are secure...and the game copy protected and such...

The key might just be getting the right info to the right person...

Dial-up.   Not kidding, it will work.  That or bribe the IT guys into puting you in a DMZ with your own Public IP.   That may require hookers and photographs for Blackmail, ask J'inn.

Dial-up.   Not kidding, it will work.  That or bribe the IT guys into puting you in a DMZ with your own Public IP.   That may require hookers and photographs for Blackmail, ask J'inn.

DH is right....well...sorta... ;D

it might require you to get "creative"...asking a shmoe at the desk was probablly worthless...

Find out who the lead admin is...suck up a bit...show em what you need and that your not looking to do silly stuff....maybe they can configure you to a DMZ or set you up on your own IP......

Hell...point them right to here and we'll explain it to them...

I don't have a modem, so I'll need to buy one for dial-up.  I know someone who might be able to get me in good with the computer people here, but he's not on campus this summer.  He won't be back until late August.  I might be able to find someone in my dorm to help me.  I'm a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M (if you have no idea what that is, go to www.aggiecorps.org) and everyone in my dorm (including myself) is doing summer recruiting for the Corps.  In the Corps, people have jobs in different chains (such as command, recruiting, scholastics, supply, etc.).  One of those chains is information management (IM) which deals with computers (I am going to be the IM Officer for my outfit this fall).  I might be able to find someone else in the IM chain that could help me out or at least direct me to someone who can.

IM, huh?

What exactly does that entail?  Because, if you're going to be doing a lot of sending of information over the internet, using voice chat / video conferencing etc., you might need a lot of ports opened up anyway.  Usually, the first people you run into aren't going to know what you're talking about, try to get up the chain somehow.

Ultimately, you, or someone who knows what they're doing, are going to need access to the dorm's firewall setup.  That's where the firewall's going to have to be opened up for you to get out and play...

Good luck...

IM is pretty much responsible for maintaining the outfit website and listserv.  We also help troubleshoot general computer problems for our outfit members.  There are some people in IM who aren't very knowledgeable about computers, but there are also some computer geniuses as well.  I fit in somewhere in-between.  I'm good with hardware, Windows configuration,  and troubleshooting, but I'm kind of weak on internet and network stuff.
