Who here lives in California?

Hey folks,

Just curious, who here lives in California?  I ask because my girlfriend and I are going down that way, and we were wondering if there was anywhere we should definitly check out while down there.  We will be flying into LAX at the end of August, where we have a car booked for rental, and then we will spend the next five days driving up the coast until we hit Seattle.  Any suggestions on places to visit would be greatly appreiciated...any tips would be appreiciated as well.  It's the first time we've been to the western U.S., so we're sort of in the dark on this one.  Should be an adventure.

I used to live there. I'd say Make the Drive up to San Jose, see the Winchester Mystery house, the Rosacrusian Museum, and of course make the Drive out to see the Mystery spot. It's a wierd anti-Gravity type place.

If your into Military History, then see the Marine Museum there at Pendleton. It's pretty cool.

Of course, you can always drive out here and Visit me in Oklahoma. It's only 20+ hours or so as far as Driving.  ;)

That sounds good, since we will probably stay a night in the San Francisco area.  While I wouldn't mind checking out some military sites, Jenn wouldn't really go for such a thing.  We're looking for some nice scenery areas to visit, and we're also going to try and stop and do some hiking (I don't hike as a rule, but I'm going to give it a try).

If I had more than five days in the U.S. I probably would drive over.  Actually, our original plan was to drive from Vancouver, down to Cali, and then go cross country all the way back to Newfoundland through the U.S..  Unfortunately my mother decided not to lend us the car for the summer, so we had to put the kibosh on that one.  Either way, we're both super stoked about driving the west coast.

What used to be known as "The Presidio" is now the property of George Lucas. What was known as Ft. Ord is now all developed thanks to the govt. closing and selling off the base years ago. From what I heard from some Vietnam vets I served with who were "lightfighters" before, Ft. Ord, CA WAS the best army post to be stationed at CONUS wise.

Well lets see. I live in San Jose and can suggest a few places to check out here in San Jose

San Jose Area:
1) The Tech Museum in downtown San Jose
2) The Winchester Mystery house on Winchester Blvd by Interstate 280
3) Lake Vassona just off Hwy 17 in Los Gatos
4) Six Flags Great America. (You cant miss it.... it's at the end of the runway of San Jose International. Airport)     ;D


When driving up to San Francisco. Do not take Hwy 101 from San Jose.... Take 280. It is a much more scenic route

When I am near LA I always like to visit 2 places, when I can:

The Queen Mary

Catalina Island.  If you can spend the night on Catalina and take the interior tour, that's a lot of fun (Stay in Avalon).  Also, the submarine ride through the kelp fields is very interesting.

In San Francisco: The USS Hornet, The Golden Gate Bridge (of course), The Legion of Honor (if you are into really cool museums), Fishermans Wharf (tourist trap), Golden Gate Park (More of a walker than a hiker, but a nice place to visit. You can roller blade or bike ride and all sorts of other stuff) and Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world). Driving in SF can be a real challenge so have a good map.


In Oakland: The Aviation Museum and Joaquin Miller Park (If you really want to go on a good hike with no crowds and beautiful scenery. The park has everything from pleasure walks to hikes that will make you cry. I live in Oakland and would be glad to take you if my schedule permits).


Farther North: Sequoia National Forest (biggest trees you'll ever see), Lake Tahoe and dozens of quaint small towns with their own charms, many from the Gold Rush era.


Farther South : Monterey and Carmel (The Monterey Bay Aquarium is fantastic, but over priced to get in. You saw part of in in STIV The Voyage Home. They used it for the whale's home), Yosemite (costs money to enter the park and is generally crowded in the summer, but the pass lasts seven days. Don't plan to camp unless you make prior arrangements as the waiting list is years long I think) and the Mammoth/Big Sur area (a good place to hike).

Come on Soreyes, driving 101 is a treat. Everyone should experience the world's longest parking lot.   :P
Last month my wife wanted to go to Ikea in EPA so we took 85 to Mountain View and then 101 to EPA
and the 5 minutes we were on 101 was the longest of my life. I'd rather have a root canal done. At least
then you are heavily medicated.   ;D

Highway 101 is good to drive on outside of San Francisco, correct?  Is it just within the city that the traffic is heavy?

Well sort of. It is really bad in the city since the '89 earthquake took out the Embarcadero freeway. Now you have to dive up Van Ness Ave (well not have to, but I wouldn't suggest getting too far off of it unless you know your way around). which is right through the center of town. 101 gets bad right before the city and anywhere it passes a major metropolitan area. Highway 5 is the fastest route from LA to SF, but it is in the interior and all desert and farmland. The most scenic route is Highway 1 up the coast, but if you take that be prepared for a 12 hour drive. Its very pretty, but very twisty and takes forever.

I forgot to mention Point Lobos in Monterey. That right there is worth the drive to Monterey if you want to see California in it's ultimate beauty. Mountains and cliffs right up to the sea and tons of wildlife to check out.
