Garage door opener sensor
« on: May 29, 2005, 01:35:32 pm »
Having a problem with Craftsman garage door opener and I 've narrowed the problem down to the receiving safety sensor. If I block the light path from floor towards cieling the sensor status LED cuts out crisply. But blocking the light path from cieling towards floor the sensor LED flickers as I near the path before cutting out completely. Problem is when the door is completely open in daylight the receiving sensor LED is just barely flickering but enought to trip the door into reversing as if there was an obstruction in the light path. But if the door is only about 3' feet the sensor isn't flickering and will allow the door to close.

Now, the only thing I've done recently is powerwash the concrete driveway.

Anyone know if a garage door opener sensor can be blinded by too much sunlight reflecting off concrete ?

Well, those things are IR.  Are there any other IR sources or even sources of heat nearby?  Or something reflective nearby?  I have absolutely no clue what exact frequency or band it uses.

Oh, and is there a sensitivity adjustment on it anywhere?

You're having trouble with the safetly thing right?

This might not be feasible in your situation, but you could just upbolt them from the frame and tape em together so they can't be obstructed. It would certainly solve the issue.

This justs get better. It didn't happen that night and only once over the weekend. WTF!

I was thinking maybe washing the concrete had pushed some moisture into the sensor and screwed it up. But I got down to floor level to clean the sensor lens and noticed that there is a lot of glare coming off the concrete apron when the sun is unobstructed. Maybe I cleaned it a bit to well? If it happens again I've got some dark sand ready to spread out on the apron to see if the glare is screwing with it.

How 'bout just a black piece of paper or rubber or something first?
