Bad old puddy tats...
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:15:42 am »
Well, went to the store yesterday, and my son was with me.  Came out of the grocery store, and heard meow's coming from under the hood.  Lifted the hood, and there were two stray kittens under the hood!  (I've got an 85 BMW, two battery compartments, and they were in the empty one).
So, not wanting to just dump two stray kittens out, (they are about eight weeks old), I picked them up.  Both were terrorized by the trip to this store.  I got clawed up by one, but I still put them in the car.
Both immediately went under the passenger seat.  So, I went to the last stop, and then home.
The solid black one was easily removed.  The other?  A black and white?  Not a chance.  Little bugger climbed up IN the seat.  Well, they are electric seats.  Couldn't get it out, so I put some cat food in the floor board, thinking it would come out to eat, and I left the doors open, so it could escape.
No luck.  Four hours later, it was still in the seat.
I went and tried to get it, but the spaces are very narrow, and could barely get my hands in there.  I had to just about remove the seat, but the seat was sitting in such a position, I couldn't get to the rear bolts.  Still couldn't get the little bugger.
At about 11:30, I went inside to take a break.  (Already spent about four hours digging for this stupid cat.)
My wife and I talked about it, and we decided that I'd have to cut the seat up to get it out.  (Leather seats.  Guess the  cost?)
I went outside to do the dirty deed, and that little .... was sitting on the steps leading up to the porch!!
So, now I am fixing to go back out and put the seat back together, and now will start checking the engine compartment for 'hitchhikers', to make sure this doesn't happen again.
We even called the local police, and the officers that showed up tried to get the kitten out, but finally got a call and had to take off.  I thanked them, but you could tell that the male officer was annoyed, not because he was called out  for it, but because he wanted to make sure the kitten was safe too.
   And, how was your night?

I'm just glad that you hadn't put steel to target before noticing the kid had decided to come out. ;)

I think I would have tried blowing some smoke into the area before I cut up a leather seat. I'll bet kittens don't like cigars any more than I do! LOL

Tried that.  The kitty asked me for a smoke of it's own.  Absolutely no effect.

I have a feral cat that's destroying bird nests on my house and eating the hatchlings.  He won't go in the humane trap I've put out, so I am going today to try and find a motion detector with a noise maker that will frighten him away from sections of the porch where the nests are.

Failing that, it's going to be bad news for him I'm afraid.

Dracho,

Cats aren't really fond of strange, enclosed places. How long has it been out, and what's it baited with? If it has only been a day or two, it's not going in there. That will take time.

Also, and this is cruel, but since it likes live prey, how about live bait? I'm fairly sure that you are using something dead. Try one of those 'mobile meals for pythons' (mice) tied inside the trap. Even if kitty doesn't want to eat it, he might not be able to resist running in there and batting it around a bit. ;)

He's actually stripped the bait out.. I've used tuna and dog kibble.. I think he stretches out and uses his body to keep it from closing.  I have caught a couple of possums though..

I think I will try this little toy I just found.. If it fails, I'll be waiting up for him this weekend with the NVG's and a less humane method of dispatch.. which I really don't want to do.. but I am sick of my song birds being killed on my own porch..

Hopefully it will work, but since it's a feral cat it will likely be braver than most. :( Sometimes, you just got to do what has to be done.

He's actually a pretty cat.  He's a sort of a blue/grey color with a white chest.  I'd hoped to trap him and give him to a friend who had a rat problem on his farm.

Try tying a piece of meat to the cage... I mean right down on the floor of the cage.

Hopefully, the cat will try and get in there close to get some leverage in an attempt to pull it loose?

Ok, then I would try a nice Boa contrictor. I'll bet you'll fix the problem one way or another.

Well, got the seat back together without having to cut it apart, went and prepared for a store run again, and popped the hood.  That retarded cat was under the hood, again!   I chunked him out of the car, no sign of him since.  Maybe he figured it out...
