Anime?

I thought Anime was strictly something that was from the orient...from the US it's called cartoons.  Of course the cartoons of the 70s in the US were some pretty sorry affairs if some of the samples I've seen are any indications...

The older cartoons such as Looney toons, Hanna Barbara, and things like Woody Woodpecker and Tom and Jerry are much better.

However, in the Anime light of Japanese anime, the only anime I've seen is Robotech and that Battle for the planets or something on Cartoon network.  I saw Robotech since my uncle has the entire series.

Wait, and I think there was one other that showed on cartoon network for a while, something with a train in space or something wierd like that.

Voltron, Transformers and G.I. Joe are all IIRC Japanimation... and are all regarded as some of the best cartoons of the 80's.

GI Joe...Japanimation????  Truly you jest.  That along with the Transformers were made completely by Americans...how in the world do they even come close to being japanimation.

The first cartoon in the US (besides Robotech of course...and that kind) that is considered to be maybe...just maybe japanese anime is a cartoon that is called Thundercats.  Though not from Japan it is sometimes considered anime due to all the asians that worked on the cartoons, and from what I've read, when one looks at the credits there are tons of japanese and korean animators that worked with Bakshi (sp?) on it.  Ironically, the same people who made the Hobbit were the minds behind Thundercats.

I think Voltron was Japanese anime however (never seen it, but I know of it).

Starblazers...I've heard of that as well.  Kind of wierd idea, the battleship Yamato ressurected as a starship...but I hear it was quite popular.

Robotech was and is cool.  That I've seen on my uncles DVD collection.

It was done by an American company, but contracted out to a Japanese group to do the actual animation.

Where it was made doesn't matter. A Toyota is a Japanese car even if it's made at the Tennesee plant.
Transformers and G.I. Joe were domestically produced Japanimation.

Battle of the Planets was perfect for me when I was a kid back in 78, 79 when it aired. There wasn't anything else like it beforehand. After doing a bit of research, I see it was a heavy edit of the original Japanese edition; it's too bad there probably won't be a direct translation from the original. I think it would go over well even today.
